Does a Packard Bell 486 Ledend need "Company" specific Dos 6.2, Win 3.11,
and Win 95 upgrade? Or can I just install regular versions? Do I have to
worry about anything in the Bios? If I Erase C drive and reinstall will I
be okay without "Company" software?

Any software will run.
You must use the hardware specific drivers though. If you can save those or
find them on PB's website you are all set. In fact better off. Excellent
interim solution until you can buy a real computer.

You don't necessarily have to run "PB-OS", only if you install plain
MS-Dos or Windows 95, be sure you know which hardware is inside your
PC and where to get the drivers for it. The Packard Bell Software is
fully configured with all drivers included, which is quite unusual for
common Microsoft Oses. Maybe you should ask the Packard Bell hotline
about the contents of your Legend (tell the Serial Number from the
rear of the PC case). They sure will give you a complete answer.

Mine runs fine with no "company" software other than the Headland Technologies
video drivers. Windows 95 can use its built in Video 7 drivers.

By the way, you would be better off asking in alt.sys.pc-clone.packardbell.

Packard Smell is a real computer. Just ask anyone
that has been through Packard Hell trying to make
them work.

The answer to the original question is: "No, you
don't have to use the original Packard Bell
versions". Quite a few of my customers have
failed to make floppy installation disks from
the images PB puts on the hard drive. Then they
have to buy generic versions when the hard drive
fails or they do something silly that nuc's the HD.
Never had a problem, but PB is the ONLY place that
you can get their crappy "PB Navigator" if you
don't know any other way to access programs.

Hi Mike,
I also own an older PB Legend and just "went for it." I formated the C
drive and just started loading Win95. (Make sure you have the CD-ROM drivers
on your boot disk...You can find out more about this at
http://www.netpathway.com/~kramer/reinstall.html)
The Windows95 CD 'should' have all the drivers you need for running your
peripherals.

Good luck!

I installed Windows95 on a Packard Bell Legend and have had fewer
problems than before. I do have 16MB RAM rather than 16.

No, just use standard OEM version of PC Dos, MS Dos or DRDos...
go for it..
only caveat might be a switch for emm386.exe for extended/expanded
memory or machine type.
Do this command to learn more at any dos prompt

emm386 /?

Yes, go ahead, and as said above make sure you have a copy of the cd
rom driver s/w on floppy assuming your win95 s/w is on cd.

I have had this computer since November 95 (I think) Only complaint I
have is that, since going over to 95 from 3.11, it runs pretty slow,
even with 20 meg ram.

I have now got myself a Pentium 2, 233 to do things faster.

I will soon upgrade the 486 to a Pentium 133 using an overdrive chip,
the kids can then use it and leave me in peace to use the P2.

Incorrect.

I've got Win95A running on an 486DX2/66 Packard Bell Force 1144. About the
same vintage as the Legend in the message you're responding to.

It installed without a hitch, and even included drivers for their arcane
on-board video hardware. I did a scratch installation (formatted disks,
installed DOS and CD drivers, then installed Win95 on that).

Much to my absolute amazement, it runs notably better than DOS6.20 / Win 3.1
ever did.
