Hi!

I tried to install this 2-version of Minix to one crappy IBM PS/2
(286), there is 1 MB memory what should be enough for the
XT-installation .. I booted with the XT-minimal bootfloppy and it
started and the setup script asked me to run "part".. the part-program
starts and when I kick r-key it reads the table, the 30MB disk is in
bios-function-mode.. but then it just freezes.. nothing happens.. I
cannot quit from that "part"-program and so on.. What could help me,
or is it impossible to install Minix to this PS2?

I'd be happy if I get answers in way or another, but if possible,
please reply (or make a carbon copy) also to my mbox lla...@sci.fi,
because I don't read this newsgroup very often.. Hopefully somebody
could help me.. =)

There are better fixes, but an adequate one for you should be to set
processor=86 in the boot parameters. This will force the 286 to run in
real mode, eliminating some problems with the switching between protected
and real mode that is necessary when using the hd=bios option. It will
incidentally give you use of a full 640K rather than just 586K you will
see in protected mode. You will not be able to use more than 1M of memory,
but you only have 1M anyway.

There is more information about some patches for PS/2s on my page at
http://minix1.hampshire.edu in the hints section. Look at the articles
on:
* Using all 640K on a 286.
* A patch for mode-switching problems on 286s. (Osamu Ishibashi)

There has been a lot of discussion of PS/2 problems and solutions for
Minix on the net, but I don't have any such machines and I can't
evaluate everything that has been said. You may find more relevant
information by looking at the archives of the comp.os.minix newsgroup
at ftp://minnie.cs.adfa.oz.au/minix/ or or the minix-l mailing list
archives at http://listserv.nodak.edu/archives/minix-l.html.
