Now, I am trying to add some of the comforts of home to my
tiny li'l *nix, and am looking for a few pieces of advice/info:
1st, the man command included does not work (even after I downloaded
a good boatload of man pages). Neither did the shell-script man
I saw on plains.nodak. Finally, neither does the "-man" option
exist in the included nroff program, so that option was out, too.
So, how does one avoid dog-earing the pages of his minix reference?
2nd, how about the shell. I tried the shh patches to the included
shell, and it somehow doesn't understand the keyboard. I have to
interrupt it. Otherwise, it would suffice, given aliases and the
improved prompt and command editing. But, I would really prefer
to get the KSH to work. BTW, I DL'd the sources for ksh, but
can't seem to compile them. What's with Makefile.cpp ???
3rd, there seem to be a variety of alternate compilers out there,
ie. gcc, bcc, etc... Which ones are most necessary for general
happiness (ie. compiles most things), and in addition, what
other additions are good to have (ie. what are virtual consoles
and do I need them? what about curses?)
Lastly, communications -- the term command included, which as it
should uses /dev/tty2, doesn't seem to actually find my /dev/tty2.
I know it's out there -- kermit found it ok, but I'd like to be
able to connect without kermit, ie. to use zmodem for things.
What alternatives are there, and shouldn't term work?
I guess that's quite a bit of things to ask about at once,
but why not get it all in at once while I'm thinking about it.
Thanks to everyone who got me through the upgrade, and in advance
to those who can help me out with this current crop of questions.
