Hello,

as I've written many times, I am using Minix 2.0.4 on a 286-based system
with 4 Mb of memory.

It runs quite successfully a self-compiled kernel with networking support
and a bit as HTTP server.
Using DOS I can browse the web (Arachne), write e-mails, irc-chat, use
Windows and so on.
But I ask myself what use this system could have, so I ask here, as I didn't
find much information myself:

Is there a list of programs which runs on Minix-286? Especially I'm
interested in some kind of (La)TeX and other general-purpose software ( a
full-screen editor would be nice or a file manager like Midnight
Commander ), if such software exist.

I'm looking forward to get some used book from somewhere (OSDI second
edition), then I might be able to study the source.

Regards,
Sebastian

I just brought the 3rd edition of Operating Systems: Design and
Implementation from Amazon and noticed that there were used copies of
the second edition for as low as $9.86 plus shipping. Here's the
address
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/0136386776/ref=lp_g_1/104-6489324-1625509

hope this helps,

There is/was once wuite a lot of useful software for minix2, mostly in
ftp-servers. I cannot say how much did survive up to today (the last
time I actually tried to mirror what was left, was araound 2-3 years
ago and then a lot of ftp servers had already been switched of: This
seems to be a general tendency, to switch of ftp archives and replace
them by some "smart" http servers, which in turn don't live as long as
the ftp servers did 10 years ago. The half life of software on the web
has certainly decreased :-( ).

For editing: mined or jmacs. There never was a latex prot AFAIK, but
the nroff substitute in minix2 can go a long way. Another idea: There
is some "modernized" Unix V7 source around -- look for s.th. like the
"hierloom tool chest" -- it should be possible to port that to Minix2
without too much difficulties and AFAIR a troff/nroff is contained in
the tool chest. Plaugers "software tools" have also been liberated, I
think, and should be rather portable to Minix2, but AFAIR they'll give
you a positively "vintage" feeling.

A starting point to find software for Minix2 was always Al Woodhulls
excellent archive. Is it still online?

A good idea :-).

The old URL's for the Al Woodhull's sites are not working anymore, but
he has an updated (at least up to 27 Jun 2006) site on Minix 2 at
http://minix1.woodhull.com/

Hope this helps, I used to have a server with info on Minix and some
software mirrored from Al's FTP site, but I have had to move to other
city some months ago and I haven't time to bring up my server again.

Yep. I remember he wrote some time ago at c.o.m that the old site just
died from hw failure. I'm happy to hear, he's still carrying the
Minix2 stuff (will have to make a complete mirror some time :-).

This, and the death of old almost forgotten servers ("X died yesterday
-- what was on it anyway? -- Just some really old stuff, John put on
this server, well, 8 years ago -- now then no need to restore,
probably old anyway") somewhere in forgotten corners of unoversity or
their implicit walling in by a new security policy, is probably what
got most of the old archives with the more obscure stuff.
