The long and the of it: I am looking for a distribution, that will
provide at least Samba 3.0.24. I have a mod-chip installed and a
Cromwell BIOS flashed on it. I'd be happy about any suggestions.

I had no problems to connect a PC with SUSE Linux 10.2 to such a server.
Only problem was: when defining a permanent connection with the mount
command, the protocol has been renamed from smbfs to cifs. See:

Hope this helps,

afaik, only Win2k and Win XP clients can connect properly, although I
only had the chance to test with Win XP Home and Professional.[1]

I can connect successfully from my Debian Etch and Ubuntu 7.10. Both are
using pretty recent Versions of Samba, i.e. 3.0.24 and 3.0.26a
respectively.[2] The problem with my Xebian-distribution is, that it is
based on Debian Sarge. I tried backporting the samba package, but it's
(only) inches short: 3.0.23c. And that doesn't work yet.
I tried dist-upgrade twice, but couldn't get it right. Both times the
system was destroyed afterwards, due to problems with the graphics...
Yesterday I found this distribution: Gentoox[3]. It's based on Gentoo
(as one would guess :) ). But I couldn't find a list of packages Gentoox
is using. Can someone show me?
