I'm going to change my graphics card (S3 Vision864 2MB) to one of above.
I need faster one for Xfree with min 4 MB (VIRGE-EDO 40ns, ET6000 MDRAM)
of memory.
Any suggestions?

Steering you in several directions at once...

I've frequently heard of interactions between the ET4000Wxx chip
families and COM ports. I seem to remember hearing about the same
with the ET6000, though I'm not sure. Especially if you're using
COM3 or COM4, I'd check this one out in more detail before buying
an ET6000.

If you are considering a ViRGE, try for the newer ViRGE/DX or GX
that are just coming out. They have a 3X performance improvement
in 3D, which may be significant for 'other uses' of your system.
Assuming MesaGL gets hardware acceleration, the DX/GX have more
of the features that will be needed. Aside from that, the DX/GX
make the plain ViRGE and /VX obsolete. While we don't always need
to buy the latest'n'greatest, there are sensible points to 'buying
ahead', and you may not want to buy a chipset near its 'end of life'.

I've also seen numerous XFree86 driver complaints with the ViRGE,
but I can't say a thing about the ET6000, other than I've seen it
in message headers, as well.

I fear this confuses, but at least it's information.

DON'T buy a ViRGE/VX!! Our lab has 5 or 6 GW2K PC's with the OEM
version of this card, and each and every PC has intermittant X hangs
when the user logs out (Redhat 4.0 release, with X3.2).

As of XFree 3.2A, the et6000 is faster (much) and better
supported than the Virge. Xfree benchmarks:
http://www.goof.com/~xbench

Currently the Virge support (even in 3.2A) is probably slower
than the original poster's 864 which he is trying to replace.

I'm not sure that the DX or GX variety will even work with
the Virge server.

Mark.

There is nothing wrong with ViRGE. I used it since it came out. I
don't have any problem so far. It could be something to do with GW.

As far as I can tell the Virge/VX is much slower than the ET6000. I have
the STB Velocity 3D that comes in Gateway machines. I bought the
Accelerated X server for this machine as I new there was lots of troubles
with it. I fact, Xig only brought out a Virge/VX/DX/GX server when I'd
bought it so there's is a little buggy still but works fine. Accelerated X
also supports the ET6000 I believe.

Have you noticed the ET6000 having any of the annoying COM port
interactions that the ET4000Wxx had? I just checked the Tseng
web site, and am sorry to see that the ET6000 has no 3D features.
Of course the value of the ViRGE 3D has been under question, too.

I have a GW2K PC with the OEM Velocity3D (with the Virge/VX) and I don't
have those problems. I find 8bit and 16bit quite stable with no
problems. The 24bit support is still a little buggy and I don't use it
because of that but they are apparently working on that right now.
(Debian 1.2, X3.2 and now X3.2A)

I suggest that you have a look at www.goof.com/xbench for benchmark
tests on video cards for X.
