I'm still a bit inexperienced at Linux/X, but I had the same problem - check
your monitor refresh rates and settings you have specified, because it
produces
that effect when they are invalid. If you have more than one mode configured
as possible, use Ctrl-Alt-"+" or "-" to switch, and see if it works on any of
them.
