Can I Add "America/Houston" To /usr/share/zoneinfo?

I'm working on "optimizing" my system and want a specific time zone for
my locale. Would there be a breach of time zone etiquette standards if
I did the following:

ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/CST6CDT /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Houston

Then modify my /etc/sysconfig/clock to contain:

ZONE="America/Houston"

A diff of /usr/share/zoneinfo/CST6CDT and
/usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago shows the two files are the same.

Run: "tzselect" answer questions and it will tell you what to
use. Houston is on Central Time so is Chicago.

Thanks, but tzselect doesn't give me what I want. I'm optimizing my
system and I want to know if there is any problem if I add the soft link
in the original question.

Anyone,
I'm getting nitty-gritty, I don't just want things to work. I want to
know why things work the way they do. If there is a zoneinfo entry for
Chicago, is there a problem if I add a zoneinfo entry for any other city
in the Central time zone that subscribes to DST by issuing the following:

ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/CST6CDT /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/<City>

It appears as though /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago is a copy of
/usr/share/zoneinfo/CST6CDT (per Red Hat 8.0).

Ideas? Any NTP hotshots out there?

I don't see why not. The contents matter not the file name. Check "info
libc" for TZ related stuffs for more info.

I'm sure you could make a symlink or even rename the file but
Central time in Chicago is the same as Central time in Houston.
Unless you live in parts of Indiana and what is it N.W. North
Dakota at least.

There is only one file - what you see are two hard links to the same
file. Run:
ls -i /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago /usr/share/zoneinfo/CST6CDT
and you'll see that both have the same inode.

You can also show that /usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Central is also the same
inode, so why not use that?

But if you insist, just add another hard link with whatever filename
you like. Just remember what you did and don't complain to the distro
publisher when your next upgrade doesn't include your favorite city. :-)
