Use licq, it is the best IMHO.

The java one stinks, too slow and unreliable. Use licq, which you can find
via freshmeat.

you can get licq from freshmeat.net (just do a search). this is an
excellent ICQ client, but you will also need to grab the Qt libs (also
search on freshmeat).

I received nothing but trouble from Java ICQ. Although rumor has it that
mirabilis may be releasing a *real* ICQ client for linux soon...we can
only hope...(since i have been hearing that for more than a year now...
;))
