ftp to linux host

Hi,
I am trying to ftp from vxsim simulator running on linux host to the
linux host .I get the following error message:

----/ftp> ftp
ftp> open 199.30.19.218
akshath-OME FTP server (Version 5.60) ready.
Connected to 199.30.19.218
User (199.30.19.218:()): akshath
Error, can not connect to FTP server.
ftp>

ping from vxsim to host works fine:
PING 199.30.19.218 (84=20+8+56 bytes)
64 bytes from 199.30.19.218: icmp_seq=0. time=10. ms
64 bytes from 199.30.19.218: icmp_seq=1. time=0. ms
----199.30.19.218 PING Statistics----

i have the gssftp running in my machine. i just wnated to check if
FTP server is ruuning on my linux , so tried ftp <local host> but get
the following error:
[akshath@akshath-OME xinetd.d]$ ftp 199.30.19.218
Connected to 199.30.19.218.
220 akshath-OME FTP server (Version 5.60) ready.
334 Using authentication type GSSAPI; ADAT must follow

any idea what is the issue here.. Do i need to have vsftpd always? i
dont have it at present. Any help is appreciated..
