I am sorry about crossposting, I read that up to 3 is permissable and it
is wise to set a followup group to. If you do not have access to the
followup group of comp.os.linux.setup or alt.os.linux, I will check them
all, thank you.
Firefox is not working too good anymore in my Fedora machine, I want to
upgrade it to a higher version of 9 but that will have to wait for a
spell. I cannot put in a new drive, install Fedora 12, then pluck very
important files and configs from the old disk because Fedora uses LVM and
every single system disk it starts with is called VolGroup00, including
the old one so I cannot mount it and take stuff from it.
For now, I want to update Firefox with yum. It all looks like it will
work, hell of a lot of dependencies but they work out, and yum asks if I
want to download these files and proceed. Yes I do. Then it errors out
with a bunch of conflicts that I do not understand, maybe they are things
I can remove and install again later or are redundant, I don't know. The
log is hard to read in a Usenet window because of word wrapping so I put
the original install log as captured in a term window online for someone
to see that can help.
The yum Firefox update results can be viewed here intact with no word
wrap:
http://www.ohmster.com/~ohmster/hold/FC9_FirefoxUpdate.txt
And if you really do not like going to URLs at all, I will past it in
here for you, although I think that the non-word wrapped version is much
easier to read.
Somebody please help, how can I update Firefox on Fedora Core 9 please!
Here are the install logs, not in URL:

Crossposting is all okey, while mutliposting is a no no. Follow-ups are bad
for you exclude those who don't subscribe to the followup groups from the
discussion.

Since F7 you can do updates from a older version to a newer version of, which
makes it a lot easier for you, just remember to make a backup before you do
the update, just in case. It can be good to uninstall third party RPMs, as
those can cause problems, then reinstall them after the update.

As you see from the error, you have installed gnome-doc-utils-0.8.0-2.fc6,
which is for Fedora Core 6, you should NEVER mix packages from different
versions of Fedora (or from any other distribution), you will run into
problems, so do a:
rpm -e gnome-doc-utils
Do also check which other packages you have installed for FC6 and uninstall
those, if you need the packages, install them from the Fedora 9 repository.

If you supply an url, don't include the it in the post and urls always
preferable when it comes to long outputs.

OK, slow up *right* there. You can put in a spare drive, duplicate
*everything* to a safe location on the new drive or on another system
with a bootable CD, avoid the use of 'VolGroup00' on any newly
installed system by simply selecting to do so at installation time,
etc. There are ways to do this. Can you obtain a larger new drive,
which may be very helpful? 500 Gig SATA drives are going for roughly
$100 now.

Oh, dear. This happens most often when you've been grabbing individual
RPM's from newer releases, or shoving in things from older releases
and failing to upgrade them. That way lies madness.
> The yum Firefox update results can be viewed here intact with no word
> wrap:http://www.ohmster.com/~ohmster/hold/FC9_FirefoxUpdate.txt
Oh, dear. You're using the 'livna' repository. That will mess you up
right there, unless you're very cautious, because livna repackages, re-
arranges, and bundles rather differently than standard Fedora tools.
There are often good technical reasons to do so, but it's a
potentially huge source of trouble. If you want to do a clean update,
I urge you to get a Fedora 12 DVD, run 'yum list extras --
disablerepo=livna", and delete or replace with standard versions
everything reported. tThen update your OS, then update your Firefox
another stage if necessary.
Then, or first, update one component at a time rather than something
as intricate as firefox all at once. Try "yum update xterm" and "yum
update gecko=libs".
Last, I'm looking at the yum repositories for FC 6, which is *end of
life*. What happens if you try to update just gnome-doc-utils?

Thank you so much Aho. You have been a helper in here for like my entire
lifetime, I cannot count the number of times that you have given me good
help.
Ahhh shoot, I wanted to just see if I remember how to query an rpm if the
package is installed so I just picked one at random, gedit.
[ohmster@ohmster ~]$ rpm -q gedit
gedit-2.15.9-1.fc6
[ohmster@ohmster ~]$
WTF?!! How many fc6 packages do I have for Chrissakes?! It must have been
that livna and dag repositories that I was using. I since reset the
repositories back to original from a web tutorial that I found since many
of the repositories that I had were dead and that stopped yum from
working.
How to find all fc6 packages, something like this?
rpm -qa |grep fc6
Will that work?

Uhm, what do you mean Aho by saying:
"If you supply an url, don't include the it in the post"? If I do not
supply it in the post, then how can I supply it at all?
Ultimately I have to do a complete install of a much newer Fedora, I am
not sure if I can go from 9 to 10, I have the CD's already downloaded and
burned but never did it because something, might be X or something like
that, was a MAJOR difference than what I had so I was planning to do a
clean install if that is my only choice, but for Fedora always naming the
disk VolGroup00. That was the trouble I had last time and I could not
mount and read my original system hard disk and that sucked!
This time I am going to Ghost it over to another disk or something, I
have a nice 400Gb IDE drive just for this machine to use (Older Pentium
III Coppermine 800Mhz with 1.Gb SDRAM)., but for now, I really would like
to make this desktop usable again as Firefox seems to be locking up beryl
and my gnome desktop. Not even a Ctl-Alt-Backspace will get me out of it,
I have to ssh in and killall X to get my machine back, short of pushing
the reset button.
This was good help, thank you. Please check back as I plod along, trying
to make this work, I am sure I will have more questions such as what is
yelp and do I need it. Thanks!
At the moment I don't have any RedHat based distribution installed, so can't
verify that, but I think you will just get the name and the version, not the
distribution version, other ways something like:
rpm -qai | grep fc6
should work, but not sure if 'i' and 'a' can be used together.

Are you sure you have Fedora 9? do check your /etc/issues and see what it says.

If you have a long output from some program, in this case yum and you supply
an url to the output text, then don't include the output text to your post,
this way you keep your post shorter and cleaner (there are people who don't
understand to remove irrelevant text from the previous post when they reply).

You can actually choose to do an advanced hard drive setup, then you can name
those LVM groups and volumes differently. In your case I think the clean setup
is what you have to aim for, as either your Fedora 9 is brokan with a lot of
fc6 packages or it's a fc6 install.

This sounds as far more than just firefox problem (it just manifests another
problem), your X don't seem to be in a good state.

Not all fc6 packages have "fc6" in the name, so it's hardly complete.
Ohmster, *WHERE* did you point those Livna and RPMforge? RPMforge has
a package called "rpmforge-release" that you should keep updated when
you do OS updates. I'm sure Livna has something equivalent.
