Thank you, Kevin. xautolock is great. But it's only half of _my_
battle: can you tell me how I can prevent Linux from blanking the
screen when (only when) a user is logged in, running xautolock? (I
want the screen saver to show on the screen until the user unlocks it,
and not to have it wiped out.)
TIA

My screen goes black when idle. There has been a few times when
someone would turn the power off on the cpu thinking they are turnning
it own. It would really be nice if there were some way to activate
one of th 50 or so screen savers that are shipped with Slackware.

There used to be a program called xgone that automatically activated
a screenlock with your preferred screensaverpattern. We run it on
our DEC/MIPS/Ultrix systems but the source seems to have been removed.
This shouldn't be so hard to port to Linux. Anybody got a hinch as
to where it could be found ?
Regards
Ken

I use xautolock. A description of it can be found at
http://www.eurecom.fr/~petit/LinuxFisher/xautolock-pl10.html and it can
be downloaded from
ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/applications/xautolock.pl10.tz or
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/X11/xutils/
It took me a while to get it configured just right, but it works great
now. Also remember that you need to disable the X screen blanking with
"xset s off", otherwise you will still get the screen blanking even
though a screen saver is running.
