Hi all,

I noticed that there was a new RC2 for Yellow Dog Linux v4.0. But I could
not find a site to download the .iso from. Anyone able to give me a link?
Yellow Dog's official site requires me to subscribe to their 'enhanced'
service to download the new version. Isn't that in violation of the Linux's
GPL? Don't they have to offer a free and public download of the distro?

Regards,
Jon

No, they don't. The only thing they're required by the GPL is to
provide you the sources, at the same time (virtually) they provide
you the binaries. They're free to provide you the binary only for a fee.

No.
Free software is free as in "Free Speech", not as in "Free Beer".

In order to manage bandwidth, they initially release .iso's to their
paying customers, and then after a period of time they open up to the
public at large. Read their website for details.

Ok. They are offering their binaries to paying customers. Where is the GPL
source then?

Dunno, I'm not a paying customer. They'll probably offer them if you ask
for it.

But this is a Release Candidate, so chill out. In a few weeks it'll be
available for free, with sources, and with less bugs.

YDL should be on most mirrors within a few weeks or so. They often
release new distros to YDL.net Enhanced customers first. At least the
bugs that needed attention will have been dealt with, be patient.

They are actually up to RC3 already. My understanding is that once YDL
4.0 is eventually released, it will only be available to subscribing
customers. However, this will only be for a few weeks, and eventually
they will release it to the public.
