I periodically see kernel messages stating that source routing has failed from
some IP. I'm wondering what it means. I know source routing can be used as
an attack method, but there are no other signs of attack on the system and the
IPs are fairly "random", i.e. a message from some IP, then a few weeks later a
message from a totally different network. Nonetheless, I'd like to know what
they mean.

Linux boxes do not generate source routes. If you see one of these ICMP's it
probably means someone is using your addresses on a private network and
they are leaking out or someone is faking with your addresses. Probably
the former, but find the administrative contact for the sites you get
messages from and ask them to find out.
