It would probably be faster to make a compressed tar file, and copy
that over the serial line.

Sure would be nice if it did. If it can, I'm not aware of it.
Let me guess: fellow SecureCRT fan?

You might look into C-Kermit for file transfers over a serial link:

Is this the same Kermit back from dial-up days? I recall it didn't have
resume capability. Hence, I love Z-Modem (and HS/Link). :)

The problem with C kermit is that it is under a restrictive licence.
There is gkermit which is released under an OSI approved licence:

From the man page for lrz (from the lrzsz package that originated with Omen
Tech):
"Rz (Receive ZMODEM) receives files with the ZMODEM batch protocol.
Pathnames are supplied by the sending program, and directories are made
if necessary (and possible)..."
So moving directories is possible... Just point it to the top dir and
transfer away... You may have to use the -U switch... test as you see fit.
Zmodem!!! WOW!!! I haven't used that since my TRS-80 Model I days... I used
to run a BBS based on a Model I, Newdos80 Version2 that was heavily patched
to support 8, double sided 80 track floppies for about 5meg of storage...
Those WERE the days... Hell... I even had a hacked 1200baud acousticly
coupled modem that would auto answer and incoming call...
It was cutting edge at the time and... well... kept me out of trouble.
Cheers.

sz only gave me files but no directories and their files. :(

Good times. I started out with internal Hayes and Zoom internal modems
with Prodigy before discovering BBS' and Internet. :)

try sz with -f (or --fullpath). Normally sz will strip pathnames from
files... you may or may not have to include the batch switch... I would try
it without it first and don't forget -U... If the higher dir already
exists... or a part of the path already exists... you'll have to include -Y
to allow "over writing it"...
Cheers...
