With a fresh Slackware 8 installation, a NIC that connects to a
Gateway router, which in turn connects to a ADSL line via a DSL modem:
How do I configure my network interface to automatically get an IP
address from the router at boot time, instead of assigning one myself?
I could not find anything related to this in the 3800 pages of docu I
have; everything seems to point to pre-assigning IP addresses.
Can s.o. point me in the right direction please? I am new to LINUX.
Thanks.

What you probably need is to start a dhcp client on the NIC that goes to
the router. I don't know slack enough to know the preferred way of doing
this. If your NIC is eth0, try typing 'dhcpcd' as root, and maybe you'll
get lucky :/

[hal@cadillac hal]$ man -k dhcp
dhcpcd (8) - DHCP client daemon
pump (8) - configure network interface via BOOTP or
DHCP protocol

(That's Redhat)

Microsoft-speak for DHCP is 'automatically obtain IP address', or
somesuch.

What are you using for the gateway? If Linux, you'll have to set up a
DHCP server. If a commercial firewall box, you'll have to read it's
instructions for setting up DHCP.

process.
