Do I need to change permissions somewhere?
ls -ldg /var/lock yields:
drwxrwxr-x 4 root uucp 4096 Jun 1 20:50 /var/lock
Any suggestions?

Do you really want to run Minicom as a user other than root ?

You could either add yourself to the uucp group or perhaps create a new group
called "serial" and change the group ownership of /var/lock to "serial".
Either way, you will have to give yourself write access to the /var/lock
directory.
See ya
