Hi:

I will be getting Earthlink DSL. I wonder if there are any problems to
look forward to?

I am using Suse 7.1. Any recommendations for initial firewall
strategies? I suppose that I will have to go with software firewalling
first. Later I may try to set up an old 486 with 2 NICs as a hardware
firewall. Or is this not worth the trouble?

I will have a dynamic IP. Later I may consider a static IP, but not for
a while.

Thanks for comments.

Ze crystal ball is cloudy today. Maybe better weather tomorrow ;) What
constitutes a 'problem' in your mind? I think they block port 25, which
to me is a problem, but don't know your plans. Maybe they still do 1.5M
down and 128K up, which might make for slow simultaneous uploads/downloads.

Everybody seems to have lousy tech support, which can be a problem, but
is 'normal' for low end broadband.

Yes, block *all* unnecessary inbound traffic. The devil is in the
details as they say. Turn off all services you don't need. Make sure all
current patches are applied for your release.

I wish you luck. I tried Earthlink's dial-up service for
several months, and got fed up and frustrated with the
downtime of the newsgroup servers. Finally pulled the
plug. From what I read on their "support" newsgroups,
I wasn't alone.

YMMV.

What's port 25?

Is firewalling needed, or only tcp wraps? Software vs. hardware
firewall?

Bummer.

Was the dial up link reliable?

I have never had any particular problem with it as long as I use the best
POE in my area. The worst one *really* sucks. The best one almost never
drops out. I don't use Earthlink's newgroups servers. My experience is
that *all* the ISPs use really bad ones.

Good luck!

Port 25 is where the mail daemon like sendmail, qmail or postfix lives.
Basically, if this port is block, it means that your machine can't accept
direct mail from the outside world. It means you will have to use a client
like Netscape or Outlook to read your mail from a POP or IMAP server.

You should really go for firewalling, although some people say that
tcpwrappers is good. The main thing is to have at least something there to
provide access control.

See ya

Problems? If you consider more downtime or inability to connect via
their "modem like" link.... Or when their service recorder states
estimated wait time at 5 minutes and then you wait for 45 min. Then I
would say, Yes, you have problems to look forward to. I'm about to pull
the plug on it myself.

More specifc, how bad is going from Earthlink to Earthlink DSL? I have
never had a problem with bad newgroup servers nor dropped connections.

I have used both Earthlink dial-up and DSL. So far DSL is more reliable.
PPPoE connects quickly and stays up days at a time. The interruptions
are few and mostly momentary so far. However I gave up on everybody's
newgroup servers several years ago and have used SuperNews ever since. It's
not perfect, but it's a lot better than any ISP's supply.
