Hi,

I am wondering if you can connect to the internet with linux using
compuserve. Some sites say you can and some say you can't. Is there a
way to just use there access numbers to get online? I've already heard
compuserve is lame a dozen times, but am not sure why. Any
explanations or comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I see no reason why you can't. I know they will accept a standard
PAP,CHAP connection, and you can these days use POP, SMTP mail with
them. You won't be able to use there special gui, as it is only
available for windows.

Do you have to use compuserve, there are many other ISP's that are
cheaper and are far more Internet standard friendly. Many of them also
provide European coverage.

If you had CompuServe Classic from way back when, you could connect pppd
with a massaged chat script, and there was even a Perl RPA to authenticate
Unix browsers with their private site. I had CompuServe from when 300
baud was standard and 1200 baud was extra. They eventually caught up to
V.90, but ping times were long (almost 1/2 sec). I gave it up when they
forced everyone to the web interface, which was initially awkward even
with MSIE.

But if you have CompuServe 2000, or whatever they call it now, search for
info about IF it is possible to connect Linux to AOL, since that is
rebadged proprietary AOL PPP.
