So what's the story with the linuxsdoom.tar.gz that appeared and
dissapeared on sunsite today(11/28/94)? It runs, but complains that the
wad file is from a different game version(I'm using shareware v1.666 wad
file).

You answered your own question. If doom is v1.7, and you are using the
v1.666 wad file, then you are using the wrong one. Upgrade your wad
file.

That's what I figured, but there doesn't seem to be one! v1.666 is the
latest I can find anywhere.

Well to answer my own question you can do a linuxsdoom -warp 1 to run
it with a v1.666 wad file. Thanks to diralect on irc for this hint.

Dave Taylor has NOT officially released linuxsdoom and that's why it's
not on sunsite. Please wait for an official bug free release from Dave, since
he's been so nice to the Linux people.

The first submission to sunsite was corrupt. The second submission
showed up around 1000 PST Sunday.

The incompatible WAD bit doesn't look like a bug: the DOS users are
waiting impatiently for the release of Doom (I) 1.7a, and if iD runs true
to form, 1.7a is going to change the WAD somewhat. DT no doubt went
ahead and coded SVGADoom for the 1.7a WAD revision, to save himself some
time.

It actually only complains about the version of the built-in demo.
If you hit keys quick enough after starting DOOM, you won't get into
a demo, and the game will work. It looks and feels identical to the
DOS version, with no apparent difference in speed ... looks like a
good job!

What kernel version and svgalib version are you guys using to run it?
It keeps locking up on my system.

So, when (and where) can I get this? I was too late to get it from
sunsite I guess.
