Possible ext3 problem: Input/output error

I have rh7.2 with ext3 kernel 2.4.16.
Suddenly I wasn't able to do anything to the harddrive.
Here is part of the session pasted from the terminal:

$ ls -l
total 12
drwxr-xr-x 2 frankie lsi 4096 dec 24 09:44 l_escola

$ ls -l
total 0

# w
bash: /usr/bin/w: Input/output error
# init 6
Bus error

After trying ctrl-alt-supr I did a hard reset and it all worked
again.

This is a server and I am very worried. Should I go back to ext2 ?
