HI,

I have a four year old 486dx/66 on which I was thinking of running Linux
plus the existing Dos 6.2 / Win 3.11

However, this machine has a bios that only supports smaller hard drives.
The machine has two HD's. The original 250kb and a newer 1.2gb, for
which I use Segate's Ontrack( dynamic drive overlay ) software to
overcome the bios problem with my current dos 6.2 / Win 3.11 set-up.

Would it be possible to install and use Linux on such a set-up?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Peter

In principle - yes. What version of DDO you are using?

My theory is that someone's Emacs crashed on a very early version of Linux
while reading alt.flame and the resulting unholy combination of Elisp and
Minix code somehow managed to bootstrap itself and take on an independent
existence. -- James Raynard in c.u.b.f.m on nature of Albert Cahalan

With Ontrack DM at least v.7 you won't have any trouble. Start Disk
Manager: 'dm', go into the mainentence menu, choose "Update Dynamic
Drive Overlay", and when it prompts for switches add /N. That'll put it
into a mode to make it compatible with Unix variants. And, if you're
concerned about speed degradation, it's not a problem. Even on my old
33/486DX with 20 MB of mem and *no* external chache (old Packard Bell
machine) I noticed no difference in speed running Win95, OpenDOS, or
Linux. But the system was slow as hell to begin with anyway!

The only trouble I've had is removing it so I can move it over to my
new PII system. Check "comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage" for my
desparate plea.

I have a very similar machine, I run OS/2, Win95, and Linux, no problem. _

Should be OK. If fdisk will get upset and will ask for explicit geometry -
give him _logical_ one (as DOS see it).
