I see Aldi have this on offer. A tempter, apart from the inevitable W10
pre-installed.

Anyone know if it'll run Mint, or linux of any description? Or is it
locked down to Windows?

and

suggests it can, but it appears to need some mangling to install a 32
bit grub.

Thanks for that. I'd already seen the second reference, but I /still/
can't see anything about linux there. The github one suggests as you say
that it can be done, but it looks decidedly fraught and would possibly
exceed my skill level. Shame, might have been handy :-{

I guess you mean the machine has a 32-bit UEFI firmware, although it has
an amd64 processor. FWIW, Debian i386 installation ISO images can boot
and install on x86 32-bit UEFI machines. If you want to install a 64-bit
system, Debian "multiarch" i386+amd64 DVD or netinst CD images can boot
on either 32 or 64-bit UEFI and install either i386 and amd64 systems.
Nice, isn't it ?

"or linux of any description" sounds like it includes Debian too.

The Natural Philosopher provided some good links.

It's basically a BayTrail tablet with keyboard attached.
It has 32GB Flash inside (MMC), so no hard drive. A version
sold in Germany has 64GB. It has an SD slot (so it's possible
to add a bit more storage).

The thread says it has 32-bit EFI, and some screwing around
is required depending on what you're doing. I've seen no mention
of Secure Boot.

The unit is apparently made by ECS, and the best feature
is probably the IPS panel for the display. The CPU is worth
$18 and is equivalent to three Pentium III processors.
In terms of Passmarks, the Z3735F is 900, while a
Pentium III is around 300. The memory bus is single channel
64 bit (soldered down RAM). The CPU should start to
throttle, if the base of the unit gets hot. Because
there is no fan, a typical design doesn't have enough
cooling to leave the CPU completely unconstrained.

Yes; but Mint is what I'm using everywhere else (a freebsd server
excepted), so is for me the top choice. But as I noted, the procedure
looks a bit fraught, and I'd not want to risk buying a box only to brick it.
