Hi All,

http://knoppix.net/forum/forums/6-General-Support

I have noticed that the Knoppix forum has no new postings
since may. The mailing, similar. Nothing I post to the
forums ever gets added to the fray. Apparently, no one'
else either.

I the Knoppix project dead? Or did they just get tired of
answering questions from the riff-raff?

As I understand it, knoppix.net is not the official project home:
"Knoppix.net is a resource for users, developers, and testers of
Knoppix. The official website for Knoppix is on Klaus Knopper's
website at knopper.net."

With a new, magazine-only, version released less than four months
ago, I'd say the distro itself is still very much alive.

http://knopper.net/knoppix/knoppix800-en.html

There's also a German forum:
http://www.knoppixforum.de/

Unfortunately Knoppix has been dead to me since they discontinued
the CD release after V. 7.2. Downloading a 4GB file is simply too
much trouble for me, so I use AntiX as my go-to modern live CD now
instead.

I could not find a download link on that page. It says:

* KNOPPIX version 8.0 has been released exclusively in the current German
* DELUG edition of Linux Magazine.

Is there a way to download it (or any way to get it other than flying to
Germany and finding a newsstand) ?

I wish I could find that 4GB file to download...

Also, what is AntiX?

The randomly chosen signature file that would have appeared here is more than 4
lines long. As such, it violates one or more Usenet RFCs. In order to remain
in compliance with said RFCs, the actual sig can be found at the following URL:

Linux Magazine is published in the USA as Linux Pro magazine and
all you have to do is find a good news stand in your vicinity such as
Fog City News in downtown San Francisco and they should be able to order
it for you if they do not carry it. Or you could order it from
the publisher in the USA,
Linux Pro Magazine is published monthlyfor Linux New Media USA,LLC,
616 Kentucky Street, Lawrence, KS 66044, USA
and linuxpromagazine.com
Present price seem to vary between 14.99-1799 and subscription is over
$100/month but you can try it a a 3 month trial the last I knew.

Go to Distrowatch and read the explanations or simply
enter the term in a search window to read about this distribution.

It is not random either but a reference to GRML Linux which
is similar to AntiX or to Kali or several other special Linux
distributions designed to deal with various problems such as
system failure and intrusions by unauthorized persons.

But Knoppix is not dead except to people who for whatever
reason hate to download big files. I have a DSL connection and
do my largest downloads while I sleep.

By the way Professor Klaus Knopper is moving Knoppix
over to Raspberry Pi,I believe according to very old news in
Linux Pro magazine where he details his efforts when he is
not answering Users Questions about Knoppix. I had a question
and he very politely answered my stupid question. If I had
read the documentation aka Knoppix Cheats on every Knoppix iso
or KNOWING KNOPPIX The beginner's guide to the Linux that runs
from CD by Phil Jones, I would not have had to ask the stupid
question. I started by the way with Knoppix 3.12 about 12
years back.

Thanks, I haven't tried that. However I actually use SystemRescueCD
http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/
for administration/recovery activities. AntiX replaced Knoppix for
me as a full-featured Linux LiveCD for general use (web browsing,
word processing etc.). It can be handy.

If the forums are anything to go by, no.

History suggests that there will be a later 8.[something] release
that develops on the magazine-only release and is downloadable.

I believe it can be updated more easily than Knoppix on a HDD
install, but I've only run it from a CD.

grml is a live linux that fits on a 700 MB CD, which is what the
poster asked for.
