We have a 4-node Oracle RAC cluster using Itanium servers.

# uname -a
Linux <hostname> 2.6.9-55.EL #1 SMP Fri Apr 20 16:30:19 EDT 2007 ia64
ia64 ia64 GNU/Linux
# cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
vendor : GenuineIntel
arch : IA-64
family : Itanium 2
model : 2
revision : 2
archrev : 0
features : branchlong
cpu number : 0
cpu regs : 4
cpu MHz : 1600.021240
itc MHz : 1600.021240
BogoMIPS : 2390.75
siblings : 1
[info of the other CPU omitted]

Once in a while, one of the 4 nodes would come to a "half dead"
situation: only ping to the server works as normal; ssh, ftp or any
other networking tool times out; console is blank. The only solution
is to physically push the power button to bring it down and then up.
Is there a way to simulate this at will?

/var/log/messages doesn't reveal anything. It stops showing any line
once the box gets into this state (normally it has a lot of "session
opened for user...", "session closed for user..."). This is not like
runlevel 1 because the console is blank and the keyboard at console
stops working.
