It is an error, since the 1.06 Pak file is different than 1.01 it thinks
it is a modified wad and will not let you play it even though it is
the shareware version, I had this problem with an older version of quake
vesion quake.
There are 3 solutions:
1.use Pak file 1.01 with linux quake 1.01
2.get the register version (maybe, should work, but do not know for sure).
3.use a very old linux quake, I read an article that 0.91 did not check for
the shareware status of the game, however it is very buggy, and I do not
recommned it.
Since quake1.01 has a few bugs it would be nice for quake1.06 to come out for
linux.

Quake 1.06 for Linux is out -- ported by Linus Torvalds himself. It's
on helsinki now in the testing directory.
_But only for DEC Alpha CPU's_

I could have sworn that I used quake executable from 1.06 into
/usr/games/quake and then copied the two pak files and config.cfg into
./id1. But since you say that didn't work, you can still get previous
versions of DOS quake (even .91) from

I just realized something else. I can't get xquake to work but
xf86quake works beautifully and so that is what I use all the time. I
believe the error message you have is what I got from xquake.

"To err is human but to really foul things up requires a computer."
That's pretty damn amusing because I have the exact opposite problem.
XQuake works fine, I wouldn't say beautifully, but XF86Quake won't run
for love or money. I get an error something like Xlib can't find DGA
component or something. I had pretty much on getting it to work under
Linux. I play under Win95, when I do play. Any tips? I'm running
Slackware 3.1. Yourself? Which archives did you use? I got
intel_linux_quake101.tgz from somewhere and I use the id1 folder from my
regged installation of 1.06. I would really prefer to get this working.

What? I didn't understand that answer. The correct answer is
that linux quake only works with 1.01. It works with both shareware
and registered versions. Do some web searches for the quake pages.
I found an old 1.01 shareware version lurking on one of those. It
works fine.

You need a newer version of XFree86, one that supports direct access to
the display ram. 3.1.2 is out now, so get that.
Mark Brophy
BTW, I've found that intel_linux_quake101 works fine with
the pak files from registered DOS v1.06

If you d/led it 2 weeks ago then I'm pretty sure it would be 3.1.
Especially if it came with 2.0.x kernels. I think the highest kernel that
3.0 came with was 1.3.12 or something.

Are you sure that it is compiling fine? I mean, do you have anything else
that is giving you sound properly? If not, make sure you look at
/usr/src/linux/drivers/sound/Readem.linux cuz there is one step where you
create a /dev/ file which isn't obvious unless you RTFM. I don't know how
many times I tried before I got it right. Good luck tho...

None of the links on this site point to real files. So, at least
from here, one can not get an older version. Maybe someone out there
knows where quake-1.01 can be found.

Chack it out all Linux Games pretty much available...
That's where I found the newest xquake tar.
Enjoy.
Quake 1.06 _is_ available for Linux, but currently only on the alpha
platform. The reason is very simple: I don't have access to any fast
Intel-based machines at home, and as I've been busy with my masters
thesis lately I haven't had time to look into the Intel stuff.
Anyway, I'll try to make Quake 1.06 available on intel too, initially
only the straight X version I suspect, but hopefully eventually the
XF86-enhanced version where you can use the mouse too..

Yes, but the version of quake referenced from here is 1.06 which
does not seem to work with the linux binaries.
Sorry for posting something non-topical to the thread, but I figured
this was as good a place to jump in as any :)
I'm having hellish problems with Linux xquake. I start playing, but
after a couple of seconds later the thing crashes with a floating
exception. I thought maybe it was the Pentium float bug, but I got my
Pentium after that was fixed, and anyway DOS and Win95 quake work just
fine. Essential info:
CPU: Pentium
OS: Linux (kernel 2.0.23, Slackware installation (extensively modified))
XWindows: XFree86 3.1.2 (do you think upgrading to 3.2 would help?)
PROGS.DAT: both 1.01 and 1.06 fail in the same way.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Does anyone have any possible
solutions?
Thanks!

I can't reply for sure but my best guess would be to upgrade to XFree86
3.2 and see what happens. I was having problems with xf86quake and it
turned out that although I had thought I had upgraded, I was still
running the XF86_S3 server from 3.1.2. A sym link hadn't been updated
properly. Good luck.

Is the i386-ELF-xquake-1.0.6.gz not really 1.06???
I downloaded it and it worked and when I start it it says 1.06.

Which version of the Linux Quake executable do you have?
Something changed internally with the Linux sound drivers at Kernel
version 2.0.1 that broke the first Linux shareware Quake executable.
(DDT depended on a certain value indicating Stereo output being 2,
but in Linux 2.0.1 it changed to zero, so there's a divide by zero
error -- it has nothing to do with the Pentium FDIV bug)
Oh, DDT is no longer doing the ports for Quake -- Linus Torvalds
is. There's a test version of the Quake 1.06 executable floating
around. I've been playing it the last two days. Note: it's just
xquake, not the full-screen-mouse-playing DGA version. Quake 1.06
for DEC Alpha CPU's has been out for a month.
So the answer is get a newer Quake executable -- either 1.01 or
1.06. Version 1.01 and the docs are at FTP.IDSOFTWARE.COM in
the /idstuff/unsup directory
