Where'd my memory go?

I have a total of 8megs of RAM, and I'm having a hard time trying to find
out where it disappeared off it. When I type "free" it says I have about
7000k total, first of all. Second of all, sometimes when I login there is
4megs free. (Where did the other 3megs go? I'm not running any programs.)
Other times, I only have 1900k free... and sometimes 2300k. Where is it?
ps tells me I'm only running certain programs such as ugetty. (What's
that... and why do I have 6 copies of it running?)

To start with, you see 7MB total, because the kernel is using the rest.
The free memory you see, is low because the rest is used for buffering and loaded
programs. The portion used for buffering is dynamic, so it will be released when
you will need it. ugetty, is what manages your console[s] all six of them. You
should know by now that you can do a ATL-F[1-6] and change console. each one of
them is under the control of ugetty. If you dont want that many consoles you can
change that (check the FAQ's). Here is an example of free for me :

total used free shared buffers
Mem: 19052 14452 4600 7952 6428
Swap: 16380 0 16380

| | | | -> used for buffering.It
| | | | will be deallocated if
| | | | if needed.
| | | -> Allocated but shared between
| | | running programs.
| | -> Currently free ammount of memory
| -> Currently used by programs + buffers
-> Total memory free. In my system there are 20MB, so my kernel
is using 20MB - <whatever you see there>.

Ahem, on the right side, under "buffers", perhaps?
