Hoping someone can help me solve a problem for a recent Linux convert
who lives down the road from me. He wants to transfer pictures taken with
his cell phone, a Samsung M320 (SPH-M320) to his desktop computer, a
machine running Ubuntu 8.04.
It appears that Samsung blocks the storage device in this phone from
just being a plain storage device so we cannot simply connect the USB
cable and copy over files. Drivers to allow this exist for Windows.
Perhaps purchasing a bluetooth transceiver for the computer would help
as the phone does support bluetooth. Before we spend the money on one it
would be good to hear if anyone successfully used such a setup. Also
there might be some little thing we should know about first so asking
around is a good idea.
Emailing himself the photos will cost money each time.
He is reluctant to get another phone (and there is expense involved
there) and installing Windows just for this one thing and rebooting each
time he wants to grab a picture is pretty extreme.
All my research leads to is references to Linux's existence. Talk about
how Samsung has some Linux based phones and then unrelated info about the
M320. Bluetooth communication programmes talk about their abilities in
very generic terms. The very few programmes I have found for this
specific purpose do not list this model as a phone they can use.
Advice is appreciated. The person involved does not care about
calenders, syncing, etc, just copying those photos.
Thanks.
I was unable to get my cell phone to transfer the pictures to my computer till I bought
a cheap MICRO SD 1 gig and put in my phone. transferred my pictures from the phone to
MICRO SD card and was then able to stick the MICRO SD into my computer and got the
pictures off it. I think I paid about 5 bucks for the MICRO SD thingy.

Thanks for responding to my post.
I went over to the house of the new convert, Frank. A "Blue Diamond"
brand USB bluetooth adaptor allowed for a connection between Ubuntu 9.04
(and latter 9.10) and the Samsung SPH-M320 phone.
The phone supports the OPP profile, as does the bluetooth device. Even
says so under the phone's "Device Info" menu. Before I got there, two
calls to Samsung tech support by Frank resulted in Samsung reps stating
that the computer must be the problem. The original sales person, when
advised that Frank wanted to transfer pictures from the pone to the
computer was sold a $30.00 USB cable.
Connection was made via bluetooth. Trying to browse the phone this way
resulted in an error message.
Latter, we found this gem on the Samsung website:
"Samsung does not support the transferring of pictures from the SPH-M320
to a PC or laptop."
The phone does have a built in feature to transfer the pictures to a
website for a charge levied by the carrier (Aliant).
So Bluetooth, worked. Liars in co-hoots with each other seems to be the
root problem.
