You have not told us whether you are using the proprietary AMD/ATi
driver, or whether you are using the FLOSS "radeon" driver.
Try booting up with "nomodeset" appended to the kernel line in GRUB. If
the system boots up fine, you were probably using the FLOSS "radeon"
driver. You can then opt to install the proprietary driver from
AMD/ATi, and see whether that works.
