PCMCIA won't wake up after suspend

I recently updated my old Thinkpad-240X from Vectorlinux-4.2
to xubuntu-9.10 and in general have found it to be an improvement.
The most pressing issue at the moment is that the PCMCIA slot
doesn't wake up after opening the laptop, so I have no network
support until I reboot. I have tried removing and inserting the
card (either Xircom wired card or Cisco Aironet 350 wireless,
depending on where I am), unloading/loading the kernel modules
for the cards and the PCMCIA hardware, stopping/restarting network
from the /etc/init.d scripts, etc. to no avail. The only thing
that works so far is rebooting the machine.

It worked fine with Vectorlinux, so I'm pretty sure it isn't a
hardware issue. Where should I be looking to fix this?
