Any distribution will do, no difference really in networking.

I don't know these games. Most probably they don't have Linux versions
(check their sites), but some network enabled games do have Linux
_servers_. You should leave a few Windows boxen for gaming.

This is possible, and easy too. The Windows98 clients will think they're
talking to NT servers. Go to samba.org to read all about it.

Why make such a fuss about it, and use NT domain logon?
Just use plain NAT and go for it.
