Hello.

Does anyone know why my almost year old Debian stable keeps having quick
(two seconds long) network disconnections every morning after I go AFK
for the whole day? I have been noticing this in my logs for a few days
so far:

$ dmesg |grep r8169
[755535.837428] r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: link down
[755537.479097] r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: link up
[842998.963723] r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: link down
[843000.678184] r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: link up
[930341.871763] r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: link down
[930343.538180] r8169 0000:04:00.0: eth0: link up

FYI, this long cat5 network cable is connected to a four years old
Linksys WRT54GL router, with its latest stock firmware.

Thank you in advance. :)

Dynamic IP renewal? Does the router have some kind of logging? Try to
read it out. That will at least tell you if it has been rebooting...
Stuff like that has usually some web interface at a fixed address
(10.0.0.138 ?)

Do you mean my LAN IP addresses? If so, then no I am using static IP
addresses for my wired computers. Logs only show connections between
computers and destinations. 10.0.0.138 didn't connect. This router
doesn't even show its uptime. Bah.

Stock firmware for the WRT54GL is pretty lame. Since you paid extra for it
(vs. the WRT54G), why are you still using stock firmware? I flashed mine
with alternative firmware almost as soon as I bought it...these days, it's
running a Shibby build of TomatoUSB:

http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K24/build5x-093-EN/tomato-ND-1.28.5x-093-VPN.trx

That's the version currently installed on mine. The latest version is here:

http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K24/build5x-102-EN/tomato-ND-1.28.5x-102-VPN.trx

(BTW, uptime on my WRT54GL is a bit over 26 days as I write this. :-) )

I saw it happen again yesterday morning when using the Internet and my
other computer (Windows XP Pro. SP3). Both computers lost their network
connections. I tried power cycling the router and saw it again this
morning. So, it is not a computer problem. I will need to try resetting
the router to factory settings and see if that works. If not, then I
will try a third party firmware to see if that helps. The router could
be dying like my previous Linksys routers. :(

Impossible, not WRT54GL. In last several years we've sell hundreds
without _any_ replacement. You can try to replace power supply adaptor.

PS. Routers with no stock firmware. I've used Tomato firmware.

Hmmm,

I don't say every Linksys is the best. BTW. What is model name?
I unfortunately say only about _WRT54GL_ model.

First thing in installing every Linksys device should be alternative
software lookup. (-;

:-) Well.. the that's not consistent with truth though. I've thrown away may
WRT54GL (and/or other variants) over the years. They are cheap devices... and
IMHO, they got a bit cheaper after they were rebranded (cough).

As a cheap device though, they do have value.. just don't expect 8 years of
operation... They should last at least 3 years IMHO.

I suppose that the oldest models has now 4-6 years old and it's still
working. Sorry, I don't have such data.

Bad news after six days of no two seconds disconnections. It happened
again this morning. I guess resetting back to default settings and
reconfiguring from scratch to minimal required settings did not fix it.

If there's no switch inbetween you and your route, try turning off
auto-negotiation.

/usr/sbin/ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off

I don't think is a Linux problem since my Windows had the same problem.
No disconnections for today so far.

Weird. I wonder if I fixed it? It has been almost two weeks since I
upgraded my 24/7 Debian stable's Kernel v2.6.23-5 to v3.2.0 from its
stable backport and switching to KDE v4.4.5 (was using Gnome v2.3). I
noticed no more new disconnections, reboots, etc. on my router. I don't
see how that can cause my router to misbehave that way if it is caused
by it.
