Sony PR: "The new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other
entertainment content, and users will not be able to install other
Operating Systems to the new PS3 system".

Did anyone honestly use this feature? I know how the fanboys loved to
brag about being able to put Linux on the PS3, but what did that actually
provide? It's not as though there was popular driver support for the
PS3's hardware, and if you wanted to get some software you had to compile
it yourself as it's not as though the Cell is a popular enough target for
developers to provide pre-compiled binaries for it.

At the same time, I'm not quite sure why Sony dropped this "feature".
It's not as though it cost them anything, unlike PS2 compatibility, or
extra USB or card reader slots.

It's not broken. It's...advanced.

There was unusually many who had installed Gentoo Linux PowerPC. PS3 has been
a quite popular boinc architecture and in some of the project the PS3's has
overtaken the x86/amd64.
If you happen to have a bunch of VCD, then you are forced to use Linux on PS3
to be able to watch them.

Keep in mind that PPC/PPE is the second largest desktop Linux, you will not
need to compile everything as long as you don't use Gentoo. Of course if you
are looking for commercial programs, you usually will see that they only
support x86 and they also claim that they support Linux.

No big deal. Few users do this. If they were even interested, they
probably already bought a system. Removing this feature in a cheaper,
slimmed down version meant for mass consumption isn't a big deal.

According to an article on "Heise"
sorry, German only), people at EPFL (University of Lausanne in
Switserland) used 200 PS2s running Linux to crack ECCp-112.

Doesn't VLC support VCD (and SVCD)? I still don't see what makes the PS3
special in this case.

So few people did that anyways.

The PS3 "mediaplayer" don't support VCD, so to play you need to install Linux
with one of the many media player programs like mplayer, xine, vlc.

Ah, different problem.

Still, that seems like an awful lot of effort to go through for a VCD if
you ask me. Surely there's a way to stream VCD over the network to your
PS3, rip&convert VCD to a different format the PS3 will support, or even just
buy a DVD player that can play VCDs outright.

I'd bet more people use it than DivX VoD and ATRAC.
