In a howto, I read that the quickest and easiest install would be to buy a
WD8013. This is not the case where I am. I tried a spare 8013 here, and
linux always picks it up at the wrong shared memory address. I think it is
always found at 0x82000. The card just does not work with linux.
In addition, I read there was support for the HP27247A. Linux does not even
recognize the fact that there is one in my PC. I have tried recompiling the
kernel a hundred different times and I even tried to force some of the flags
for compilition of the appropriate drivers.
However, a 3c503 works with no questions asked. This is most odd. It's a
shame that none of the 16 bit cards work here.
I have also read in some other files I found in my slackware distribution
that the kernel does NOT support the wd8013 because of some problems it
has! What's the deal? Should I believe the howtos or the files that
came on my system? Is there even support of the HP27247A??

In my university I have installed Linux at machines with newer SMC8013
without any problems. Also I had found that the auto-config doesn't
work on older WD8013 cards, which are not soft-configurable. And there
was a kernel version which also was unable to autoconfigure the
card. A little change in the right file, and it worked.

********** Linux... try it, use it, love it. ************
We have an old WD card here at sps1.phys.vt.edu. Although it is a
little buggy, it works. To get it to work, the /usr/src/linux/net/inet/CONFIG
file needs to be changed and the kernel re-compiled. The old WD cards do not
autodetect so the values of the IRQ,and shared address have to be hard-coded
in to this file. There are limited instructions there on how to do this. For
us, this was done by adding in the lines:
OPTS = -DEI8390=0x280 -DEI8390_IRQ=5
WD_OPTS = -DWD_SHMEM=0xCC000
Good luck.
