Sudbury, Mass. (June 3, 2002) -- Sophist Solutions has shipped Led 3.0, an update to the critically acclaimed C++-based class library. Led is designed to support the construction of text editors, word processors, HTML editors, and other text intensive applications. The Led text engine is lightning fast, even when working with very large files. It supports style runs, rulers, paragraph layout information, bullet lists, tabstops, word wrapping, object embedding (including OLE™, Pictures, URLs), syntax coloring, hidden text, and much more. Led is portable and cross platform, and takes full advantage of the modern user interface features of Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP, Linux/X-Windows, and the Macintosh, such as Drag and Drop, OLE Automation, UNICODE, and Internet URLs.
The class library has undergone major revisions and improvements. The sophisticated use of C++ templates has allowed for a major simplification in combining different Led-based features without building them into every application that might want to use part of Led. Integrating with different class libraries and applications is now made much easier because of packaging templates. The entire imaging subsystem was revised to better factor out non-portable 'GDI' code, and to allow for Led to be more easily targetted for different platforms.
The library can now be built in non-UNICODE, full UNICODE, or hybrid UNICODE modes, allowing for maximal flexibility in integrating Led with your application. Led's high degree of UNICODE support (see Led FAQ#024 for details) allows for better internationalized text editing and word processing support, even on Win95, Win98, an Windows ME, where there are few UNICODE capable editors available. Led-based widgets make it easy for your applications to include UNICODE edit text controls or word processing windows.
The fastest editor class library has become even faster! While constantly adding new features to Led, attention has always been paid to its speed and stability. This release has undergone extensive testing and QA, and maintains (and perhaps even extends) Led's reputation as the fastest text engine available.
Very important to any programmer tool is the quality of the code, and the quality of the documentation. Everyone who has looked at Led is impressed. Also, the documentation has been even further improved for this release. The class reference is greatly improved, and there are now new documents which give a better overview of the organization of Led, as well as numerous new and improved examples and tutorials.
Application developers will find it extremely easy to use Led. It has a robust, advanced object design. Led's abstract-class/mixin design scales from simple applications to complex applications without requiring the developer to use more features than are needed. Additionally, Led is provided with easy-to-use wrappers for the most popular Windows (MFC), Linux/X-Windows (Gtk - GNOME Toolkit), and Macintosh (PowerPlant) application frameworks.
"Led was the ideal text engine on which to base the ActivPad student notebook accompanying our line of higher ed titles. We needed speed and large text capability - Led delivered it. We needed cross-platform files - Led enabled it. We needed the ability to embed pictures, diagrams, and Internet bookmarks - Led made all of that easy," said Doug Stein, technology manager of Addison Wesley Interactive, a new publisher of multimedia products for college courses. "We evaluated all the alternatives; Led was the only one that met our requirements for speed, robustness, features and platform independence. The price was extremely attractive as well."
"I'm still regulary searching on the web to find alternative solution, but in my opinion your product is still the best around, and most of them support only one platform.", said Marc Van Olmen, Senior Software Engineer of Sky4 Studios, a Belgian multimedia company. "Your text engine is a real recommendation for any C++ developer."
"One of the best things is the customizable behavior of the editor", said Remo Eichenberger of DATOS Computer AG, the Swiss developers of WinNC, a powerful syntax-coloring, editor for the machine-industry. " It was very important to my company that Sophist Solutions provided such good support for using the Led Class Library. The library is complex but VERY powerful. The coding style is very pretty, and the code is very stable... I can only say: DON'T WAIT, BUY IT !!"
A single developer seat royalty-free license to use Led costs US$1,399 for a single platform, US$2,199 for two platforms and US$2899 for all three platforms. This entitles the developer to source code for all purchased Led platforms (MacOS, Windows, and/or Linux/X-Windows) as well as several sample applications (including LedIt! and LedLineIt!). The purchase price includes three months of free support. Additional support may be purchased separately. Led comes with a 30-day money-back gaurantee to assure you are fully satisfied with your purchase. Substantial discounts apply to additional licenses, upgrades, and site licenses.
