I just want to know what where under linux it is best to install the
eclipse environment. I have been looking for installation guides, but
to no avail really. Also, could you advise me as to a ownership
strategy.
Kind regards,

Which way is the best to install software depends on the GNU/Linux
distribution ("Linux" is no operating system, but a OS kernel) you
use. Almost all distros provide a package installation tool (e. g.
dpkg for Debian, RPM for Redhat/Fedora, ...). Best to use this.

Thanks. Do you have any idea where I can find an eclipse RPM. They
only have the directory structure (tar.gz) under their distribution/
downloads.

Yes.
If you use an RPM-based distro, you'll find it (by high probability,
since Eclipse is quite wide-spread) in the distro's official
package tree. Which should be accessible directly through some tool
the distribution provides for software installation.
Since I don't use RPM based distros and you didn't name the
ditribution you use I can't provide any specific advice.

And if not, www.pbone.net should turn it up. Got a vague recollection that
www.jpackage.org is the place to find eclipse RPMS too. The OP will have to
check though - it's been a while.
