MkLinux DR2 is here! We are pleased to announce the release of MkLinux
DR2.
The CD-ROMs have been published and (limited) FTP access is available.
(We plan to set up a dedicated server for large FTP transfers; for the
present, we'll have to make do with www.mklinux.apple.com! So, please
have patience.)
DR2 differs *significantly* from DR1. The changes are large enough, and
sufficiently extensive, for us to request that you install DR2 from
scratch, rather than simply attempting to update an existing DR1.
By making DR2 our new "baseline" for MkLinux, we can have everyone
"reading from the same page". This will ease bug tracking, improve the
efficacy of updates and patches, etc. So, while we understand that a
system reload is a hassle, we really think it is The Right Thing to
Do.
DR2 installs as a very complete system, including the X11R6.1
distribution. This takes up quite a bit of room, but it makes
installation a snap. We hope to retain this ease of installation in the
reference release, while adding a great deal of flexibility in the
complement of installed packages.
With the release of DR2, DR1 will no longer be available or supported.
We will retain the DR1 "Help and Support" information on our Web pages,
but DR1 itself will be removed from our FTP server.
As with DR1, DR2 will be available both by anonymous FTP and on CD-ROM.
We encourage you to get the disc! Unlike FTP, CD-ROM is an efficient
and reliable medium for transferring the large amounts of data (78 MB,
compressed, for the base installation; 200 MB for the extras!) included
in MkLinux DR2, and it serves as its own backup. Feel free to share the
CD with your friends.
The CDs will again be available through our distributor, Prime Time
Freeware (PTF). The list price is $20, but PTF is offering several
discount programs to ease the pain. Visit their Web site (www.ptf.com)

The Developer Release 2 of MkLinux from Apple Provides Developers and
Customers with a Substantially Enhanced Tool Set and Valuable Features

Linux developers and customers have been asking for.
The DR2 release delivers a substantially enhanced tool set including
the latest GCC compiler, improved system debuggers, TCL, and source
code management tools. The DR2 release will also provide many bug
fixes to the DR1 release. Customers and developers should experience
substantial performance improvements and greater system stability over
the DR1 release.

The MkLinux DR2 release will include the very latest windowing system,
X11R6.1, for supporting international computing environments like
European keyboards and multi-button mice. DR2 will also provide
enhanced communications capabilities such as high speed serial access
for modems and ISDN and support for PPP Internet connectivity, as well
as support for AppleTalk print and file services. This release will
also include developer-contributed features like Apache web server.
