Linux on Alpha is still developed and up to date with x86 and other
architectures.
I have been running 2.6.21.x on Alpha PWS Miata (running Debian 4.0) for
some time and I have compiled 2.6.23.12 some days ago, but actually it
didn't boot so I will check better.
Basically support for Alpha arch is still in Linux kernel, but have
problems varying from time to time.
Some time ago, on first 2.6.x releases, SMP was totally broken on Alpha.
Now things are getting better, but I don't know what the future will carry
on.
I suppose that, one day or another, support for legacy machines will end.

Do you mean that I have some chances to run a recent kernel on my DS25?
I couldn't boot up to 2.6.1x (where 12<x<17) and I gave up, so it is
still running with 2.4.30 :-(

The releases you tryied were among the broken SMP kernel releases.
Actually you could boot a 2.6.1x (12<x<17) kernel only if SMP is disabled
in kernel at compile-time.
SMP support has been fixed since some time, tested on my 4 way AS4100s.
The 2.6.17 ChangeLog says it has been fixed in that release, but I thought
it has been later... but I can't recall perfectly.

[PATCH] alpha: SMP boot fixes
I've encountered two problems with 2.6.16 and newer kernels on my API CS20
(dual 833MHz Alpha 21264b processors). The first is the kernel OOPSing
because of a NULL pointer dereference while trying to populate SysFS with the
CPU information. The other is that only one processor was being brought up.
I've included a small Alpha-specific patch that fixes both problems.

About newer releases... 2.6.21 works well at least on PWS.
I couldn't boot 2.6.23 on the same machine, but I think I messed up
something in kernel .config.
Since there is some interest in this, I will get a better look tonight.
By now, I cannot test 2.6 kernel on the AS4100s any more because I have
installed NetBSD on them to run some experiments.

Is there a compelling reason for labeling the image "Fedora-8-alpha-DVD.iso"
when its size is just over 500MB, which easily fits on a normal CD.
Partly I ask this because my DS-10 does not at the moment have a DVD reader,
although this could easily be changed. I would have to cut short my 183 days
uptime on Alpha Core 3.
