I know it's not Scimark but this should give you an idea.

I disabled all of the automated overclocking this laptop was set up with
by default. You're looking at the stock results in the laptop's
"Performance" mode profile.

So you are uncapable to download source I have provided link, compile and run
so we can compare relative speed two CPU's? This scimark is first mention feeb
and he got score 3200 with Xeon while I got 3950 with M1 :)
then he said to try long benchmark and I got 2800 while he got
2400 with his Xeon :)

Look at what you wrote above.

I can download a free benchmark utility and give you a ton of
information or I can download some obscure Java crap, compile it and run
it just to satisfy your curiosity because the link I provided to a
professional benchmarker showing this processor overpowering the M1 and
my own Novabench results are not acceptable to you. I choose not to bother.

Heh, gee, yeah, that's a mystery. In all seriousness, though, I think
you're gonna have to think about a hardware upgrade, if you want
Win11. I read the tea leaves, and I foresee a pretty big jump in
official system requirements. Truth is, I'm surprised Win10 is
performing as well as it is for you. There must be something about
your machine that distinguishes it from my old one, though I don't
know what that would be precisely.

Scimark4 is C, not java,

Scimark4 is not "crap." It is produced by NIST and thus it is super-professional.

But a TRUE user of GNU/Linux would already know this.

Idiots looking for a freebie (i.e. digital dumpster diving) would not.

The very least you could have done is provide an executable version of
the program, not source code. I don't even have a compiler on this
machine and have no interest in getting one to satisfy you.

MaximumPC and some sites have been giving a new Intel chip (i5-11600K)
good reviews. It compares well with the Ryzen 5 5600X, which I was also
looking at. Costs a little less but sucks up a lot more power.

It runs fine, but:

1) Excel and Access apps snap open about the same as on Win8.1, but the
documents themselves (.xls and .mdb files) take noticeably longer (2-3
seconds vs 1 second). Edit: I just checked the macro security, and both
apps now show something I never noticed before:

"Virus scanner(s) installed"

So I bet each file is virus-scanned just prior to being opened. Hope
that can be disabled.

2) the Novabench test that Slimer posted earlier showed my chip (an
i5-...@2.67GHz) is running at 1.3GHz?

I've mucked around in the BIOS here and there, but need to check on that
and see if my chip has been running at half-speed for a long time.

Between those two I might be able to get a serious speed bump.

It has turbo boost I believe as second run takes 100% cpu and first

You would think so, and yet my hardware hadn't really changed since
early 2019 when I switched to Linux. Something about it was not
right. And yet I'm enough of a Microsoft fanboy to build a new box to

You mean the AMD chip uses more power? I've always heard that is the
case, which is one reason I went straight to Intel.

That's usually what it is. In some cases, the drivers provided by the
manufacturer are awful and you're better off installing whatever Windows
Update offers you. On my old laptop, one of the "mandatory" installs
capped my download speed to about 40Mbps until I removed it. The
manufacturer's Bluetooth driver was also a piece of crap and once I
installed whatever Microsoft offered in its "Optional Updates," my
problems went away.

If that were the case, this laptop wouldn't be able to get 11 hours of
battery life. It might have been the case with some of the Bulldozer
processors they made or whatever they were called but their
manufacturing process is now smaller than Intel's and that usually means
less power draw, less heat production and, of course, better battery life.

Could be, the Intel chip I bought is not high end, and doesn't use
excessive power.

The Intel chips sucks up nearly 2x the power of the AMD (125w vs 65w).
Otherwise it's a slightly faster, better chip, per the specs.

Being open source as it is, usenet will never go away but it'll never be
what your grandfather would use. Enough already. You're again trying to
push your ego when you have no skill. You're the dull knife in the drawer
and your many incoherent programs show this.

With no reason at all, as is the norm for Commander Kinsey.

Commander Kinsey must understand that Gremlin can go get a Mac, right,
sicko? And, of course, anyone can can get software to block his crap, which
renders his trolling useless, just like Commander Kinsey ;) The cult-like
herd's passed old text through Google translate with (I'd guess) the MaxCliqueDyn
Maximum Clique algorithm to automate texts which are in the form of ones
from my posts. Only what Commander Kinsey wants matters to Commander Kinsey.
There is nothing Gremlin can do to change that. It's a chance to cause
harm and it is what it is.

That might have been case in the previous generation when AMD's
Bulldozer architecture failed miserably but today's AMD processors are
superior to Intel's in every way.

However, I am curious what the Scimark result represents. It seems to me
that it limits itself to how fast the processor alone is in a number of
tasks. As we know, the M1 was designed in such a way to make sure that
it communicates with the rest of the system more efficiently than an x64
processor so I guess the result shouldn't be that surprising. However,
the GPU is not taken into consideration, as far as I can tell. Is there
a _graphics_ benchmark you can recommend to see how well that performs
vs. my combination of Ryzen 9 + RTX3060? After all, a processor can only
do so much of the work on its own.

That's the i5-750? Yeah, I think that's what my father-in-law had in the
computer he replaced a year ago. It was a shockingly slow piece of crap
and I went with him to replace it for a Ryzen 5. Even in Linux Mint,
that thing just struggled to get anything done.

Glxgears, from mesa-utils.

run as:

__GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=0 glxgears -fullscreen

My result, for a lowly Nvidia GTX 750 Ti:

20633 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4126.585 FPS
20633 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4126.599 FPS
20633 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4126.422 FPS
20634 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4126.750 FPS
20581 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4116.132 FPS

Not bad for a cheap $75.00 card.

My computer just doesn't feel that slow to me. Never did. There are
exceptions, but not much I do makes me impatient with it.

* apps open in no time - most in 1-2 seconds.

* the big python program I run (to download Usenet data) posts 2-3
messages per second to the db. That's pretty slow, but I run it in the
background.

* like* text searches against SQLite text columns are slow, particularly
when searching for phrases.

* another python program I run (to sync files between an SSD and an
external USB) is just OK, but a really fast computer might save me a few
minutes per week here, at most.

* sorting 4000 Thunderbird messages by Subject or Date or Order Recd is
half-a-second at most (sort by From is slow - Mozilla seems to have
forgotten an index in their backend Thunderbird SQLite db).

* navigating the filesystem is acceptable - not as fast as Linux but not
bad.

* copying files is just OK, definitely not fast. Windows especially
crawls vs Linux at dealing with lots of small files.

* I rarely play games, and when I do it's Half-Life 2, which runs mostly
fine (but gets a little choppy when firing the machine gun)

* I did some ffmpeg video splitting yesterday - found a command that
will slice N seconds off the beginning and make a new vid. It ran in a
couple seconds!

* certain alterations to SQLite db tables with lots of rows is very
slow, but that's a SQLite thing.

Anyway, a new system that quintuples the speed to what you're
experiencing would be nice, and I probably will get one when video card
prices normalize.

Well, if the machine does its job and you're satisfied with the
performance, I think it's just right not to bother to buy a new machine.
I just realize that the machine I just put in my closet is way more
powerful than what you use on a daily basis for most of your tasks and
feel kind of bad that I didn't hold onto it just a little bit longer
even though it's already six years-old.

Depends on what's important to you.

The Ryzen 5 5600X isn't a better bang-for-the-buck than the i5-11600K.

But AMD should be rewarded for pushing the mfg envelope and coming out
with great 7nm CPUs. The Threadripper and Epyc (server) chips are
phenomenal too.

I do love these 1st world problems!

In the comparison link above the Intel chip is cheaper and faster, but
uses more electricity.

This really good comparo at Tom's Hardware gives the nod to AMD, but 2
of the categories it wins (gaming and overclocking) aren't interesting
to me.

Both chips will require an aftermarket cooler (tho the AMD included
Wraith is supposedly decent).

I think it's safe to say that even if computers were to stop evolving
right now, we'd have a lot more power than we'd ever really take
advantage of.

I'm not interesting in overclocking either and made sure to turn all of
that crap off with this machine since I'd rather a computer be durable
than give me incredible speed but die off after a year or two. Either
way, I simply prefer AMD because they've always been the underdog and
have even been predicted to go bankrupt around the beginning of 2010s.
Meanwhile, they've beaten Intel at their own game several times and have
repeatedly made brilliant deals to grow their company further. Let's not
forget that every next-generation console from 2013 on uses AMD chips
except for the Nintendo Switch and that is something that is guaranteed
to make the company good money for a long time.

Hmm, this is interesting because the i5 11600 would be one generation
newer than my 10400 and presumably not terribly faster clock speed-
wise. Yet it uses power ravenously by my standards.

Microsoft. It's just a hypothetical thing, though, I don't pretend to
know concretely WTF the bizarre blue screens were about, they happened
on a predictable schedule and the error code made zero sense,
especially after I went from 8 GB to 16 GB RAM (it was an error about
running out of a certain type of memory, supposedly). In any event,
I'm not sorry to have built new, given that I had the extra money from
the stimulus payments, and it will allow me to run Win11 later this
year.

day with his computer? What a lame farce!

I was wrong. His computing level is not that of a schoolgirl,
but rather of a pre-school toddler -- a retarded toddler.

Yet, in spite of this comical level of experience, he struts around
as if he knows it all in his attacks on GNU/Linux.

What a pompous idiot.

Well, either way, it is impressive that a computer like yours is able to
game as well as it does without a GPU. For my tastes, x64 and a GPU is a
better purchase but I have to admit that I am impressed with what you
purchased. However, like many other Linux advocates before you, you too
abandoned your beloved Linux to use the most locked-down operating
system on the market. No matter how you cut it, this is yet another loss
for open-source.

Fabian, as much of a cunt as he is, is probably the only true advocate here.

wonderful alternative. Ultimately I'm here more to mingle with fellow
OS-oriented people, though.

I was on my way to solving ProjectEuler problem #263, but it seems the
numbers got too big.

projecteuler.net
https://projecteuler.net/problem=263

973 people solved it previously, and it has a difficulty rating of 75%.

===========================================================================
An engineers' dream come true
Problem 263

Consider the number 6. The divisors of 6 are: 1,2,3 and 6.
Every number from 1 up to and including 6 can be written as a sum of
distinct divisors of 6:
1=1, 2=2, 3=1+2, 4=1+3, 5=2+3, 6=6.
A number n is called a practical number if every number from 1 up to and
including n can be expressed as a sum of distinct divisors of n.

A pair of consecutive prime numbers with a difference of six is called a
sexy pair (since "sex" is the Latin word for "six"). The first sexy pair
is (23, 29).

We may occasionally find a triple-pair, which means three consecutive
sexy prime pairs, such that the second member of each pair is the first
member of the next pair.

We shall call a number n such that :

(n-9, n-3), (n-3,n+3), (n+3, n+9) form a triple-pair, and
the numbers n-8, n-4, n, n+4 and n+8 are all practical,
an engineers’ paradise.
Find the sum of the first four engineers’ paradises.
===========================================================================

Sequences are interesting, so I thought I'd give it a try.

The solution requires first finding consecutive primes such that each
item in 3 pairs differs by 6. The first set of such primes is:

251, 257, 263, 269
paired off: (251,257) (257,263) (263,269)
The avg of the middle pair = n = 260

Check for primes up thru 10,000 and you get:

Triple Pairs
1. (251,257) (257,263) (263,269) n = 260
2. (1741,1747) (1747,1753) (1753,1759) n = 1750
3. (3301,3307) (3307,3313) (3313,3319) n = 3310
4. (5101,5107) (5107,5113) (5113,5119) n = 5110
5. (5381,5387) (5387,5393) (5393,5399) n = 5390
6. (6311,6317) (6317,6323) (6323,6329) n = 6320
7. (6361,6367) (6367,6373) (6373,6379) n = 6370

For primes up to 1,000,000 there are 189 such 'triple pairs'.

Now that you found n, the second and truly difficult part of the problem
is determining whether n-8,n-4,n,n+4,n+8 are all 'practical numbers', as
explained in the problem description.

I recognized that determining practical numbers can be done via "subset
summing", but it will be slow for large sets of divisors (the number
80920 has 48 divisors: 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 14, 17, 20, 28, 34, 35, 40,
56, 68, 70, 85, 119, 136, 140, 170, 238, 280, 289, 340, 476, 578, 595,
680, 952, 1156, 1190, 1445, 2023, 2312, 2380, 2890, 4046, 4760, 5780,
8092, 10115, 11560, 16184, 20230, 40460, 80920). Verifying if 80920 is
practical by trying to find combinations of these divisors that add up
to 1-80920 is way too much for a PC. I found some C code online for
subset summing and verified how slow it was. So 'subset summing' is the
wrong approach.

I made some attempts at original coding using other methods, but it went
nowhere so I decided to create a lookup table of predetermined practical
numbers. Found some efficient Swift code online, and ran it to generate
the practical numbers found up to 100,000 (which is 11751 practical
numbers, the highest being 100,000).

Armed with a practical number lookup table I completed my program -
which is a small masterpiece - but running the code for primes up to
1,000,000 generated 189 triple pairs, and none of them contains an
Engineer's Paradise number.

Turns out I need a bigger set of practical numbers, or an efficient
practical number checker routine.

Well, I haven't abandoned Linux as it is main machine for work. I use it as
server now, and I work through anydesk if I need his GUI. Also it runs games that
I stream :P
But I must admit I m curious to program macOS, so it is plus.
My child got hesktop for herself :P

I guess I'm here for the same reason though I love Linux, especially
since I discovered the repository system back when I installed the OS on
some obsolete laptop in the early 2000s and turned that hunk of junk
into an ICQ server I could connect to while I was at work. :)

One thing is for sure: if you program for MacOS and release a
half-decent, half-useful app, you will be paid for your efforts. In
Linux, that's mostly wishful thinking since most of its users have an
allergy to spending money.

Yeah, Microsoft is always upping the ante hardware-wise, whereas Linux
continues to support aging hardware a long time. Really a wonderful
thing, if one can't afford to buy a new machine.

Actually, it's a wonderful thing even if you CAN afford a new machine.
Some people simply don't want to live the consumerist life and all the
power to them if they want to hold onto their hardware for a decade or
more and if Linux facilitates that. When I consider my old laptop, which
came with a Blu-Ray reader/writer, I realize that functionality will
simply no longer exist going forward and especially since most people
are either watching Netflix or buying movies online. If I want to rip
whatever discs I own, I'll have to refer back to that machine (unless I
buy an external Blu-Ray drive) and extract them either through Windows
or Linux. That machine is basically still useful and will be so when my
son is old enough to start typing on a machine three years from now.
Much of that will be the result of Linux _finally_ working properly on
that hardware.

Reported for premeditated child abuse via forcing Linux on a minor.

He'll go to school and be persona non grata. As soon as he says "What's
your favorite distro?" he'll suffer a massive beatdown, and even the
girls will join in...

Just don't do it!

For quite awhile - particularly in the 1990s - the PC hardware replacement rate
was quite high, in no small part due to rapid increases in performance. But as
of probably now a ~decade ago, the rate of general performance improvements
levelled off, along with mainstream becoming pragmatically "good enough" which
meant that the demand to upgrade hardware was significantly decreased. As
such, pragmatic useful lifespans of PCs has increased: barring sudden failures
such as due to breakage, its probably safe to say that the average user doesn't
generally think about replacing their equipment every 2-3 years anymore, but is
probably more like 4-6 years, if not longer. Case in point, my "COLA Top Iron"
beast from 2012 is still my main desktop system (its had further upgrades, but
not in CPU), plus the laptop which compliments it is already 3 years old. Both
meet ~90% of their workflow needs, so there's no rush to pay to replace them.

Three years from now, Windows 10 will still be supported, and will run
just as well then as it does today.

If he didn't sell out to a Windows job he would be, but his GuhNoo
principles begin and end at his wallet.

Several times I've noted that slimeball would choose Windows Office
AutoCAD over Linux LibreOffice FreeCAD at work, and he hasn't disagreed.

Linux is as much a hobby tinkertoy to Feeb as it is to me.

It seems that the DuFuS is reliving his past school experiences. He must
have been continually bullied by all the techno-jocks for being unable to
do anything except play with strings.

Now he takes out his past frustrations on the GNU/Linux crowd -- but this
elite crowd doesn't listen, let alone respond, to absolute kooks.

Of course they're equated that way, by me and everyone else who knows
what's what. multi-platform shmulti-platform.

Office and AutoCAD don't even run on the crapware platform, and no
self-respecting company would run the shitty LO and the shitty FreeCAD
on Windows when Office and AutoCAD are available.

And STILL no denial, proving once again that a small part of you is
still rational, and given a choice you would make the right decision to
use the proprietary Windows, Office and AutoCAD over the FOSS Linux,
LibreOffice and FreeCAD.

I've been playing with ProjectEuler number problems for a couple days.
A lot of them seem "easy" or at least reasonable, until the last line,
where they ask you to calculate F(10^12) = F(trillion).

Feeb says:

"I wrote a project management database with that junk Microshit Access
and I had to literally pre-populate any newly created table with
"placeholder" data so that an Accass form would actually present
fields to a user. The user would have to overwrite the placeholder
data to create the first record. What total garbage!"

Absolutely unbelievable!

Doing number theoretics with built-in integer types?

Using the "pow" function for integer exponentiation?

For the first surprise, the competent world uses GMP, or
GNU Multi-Precision. Nothing in the commercial world
can even approach, let alone equal it.

For the second surprise... forget it. Look for a Microshit
"button."

Russell has talked about pirating Windows, which is really pretty
quaint, given that you can get a Win10 license for very little, from
third parties who buy product keys from businesses that have extra.
One guy on IRC said he paid all of $12 for a Win10 Pro key from such a
vendor, and seemed flabbergasted that I paid the retail price direct
to Microsoft. But I'm too particular, I have to know that my key is
legit, true retail, and mine and only mine. It's worth $200 to get
that, to me. If that makes me an "idiot" according to Russell, I must
be doing something right. ;)

That may be true of your license but it is certainly not true
of your software installation.

Microshit Winblows is pure, unadulterated junk MALWARE. It, not
you, will control your machine.

If you only knew what ridiculous junk is installed and constantly
running you would shriek in horror. There are lots of tools available
that will show the monstrous, bloated, and insidious mess that is
Microshit Winblows.

My Microshit installs, which I only very rarely use, have been
comletely gutted and purged of that garbage. I used to have
scripts for automation but now Microshit constantly changes their
setup and each new install must be manually purged. It's a process
that can consume several hours but only by doing it can one
be in control ones own machine.

Microshit Winblows is abhorrent filth and junk. I must put
a clothes pin on my nose whenever I am forced to use it. The stench
is overwhelming.

Microshit Winblows is so infernally bad that one must be a
totally insensitive and brainless ogre to actually use it
on a regular basis -- but this describes the majority of
the civilized population.

You're not wrong to point out the superior design of GNU/Linux, and
other Unix-like OSes, it's undeniable - Windows just isn't elegant in
the same ways, it's very proprietary in certain respects, but
nevertheless, I'm using the computer as a portal to the Internet,
primarily, and there are some conveniences to using Windows.

I've worked in or with the IT producers field for 15 years. I have had a
contract with multibillion businesses making deals with governments and the
worlds largest companies. Never, not at any time, was I on any occasion directed
not to install any OS the customer wanted. We sold Xenix, Lisa, Blackberry,
and so forth alongside MS OSs with no issues.

Sockboy only thinks about Gremlin, Gremlin, Gremlin!

Gremlin can create a virtual machine. Makes Sockboy cry because he can not.
Oh goodness, that is just tons of bunk.

These posts are clearly *not* automated, they are made by Sockboy who is
a pill popping pervert with a sick agenda who has way too much time on his
hands. Gremlin has been tracking him to comprehend the depths of Sockboy's
drug use.

1) Diesel / Gremlin in his incompetence included a picture of Chelsea Manning

2) Predictably others jumped in to back such trolling -- including chrisv

3) Sandman mindlessly jumped to saying said the image of Manning must be

When Sandman was called out it was easy to predict he would use his own

Sure you do. It was just a few weeks ago that you lamented your AutoCAD

without being loathed. Obviously, the only undertaking that is important
to Wolffan is seeming "honest", and if he can not have that he will flood
to desperately beat The Flying Spaghetti Monster down... ignoring him is
the only option.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster shared a specific series of urls several times

the evidence to support his allegation. Never has Wolffan done so. This
is what comes about when acutely bad faith in oneself takes over Wolffan's

You've got to be joking. The solution is glaringly obvious.

Let's consider F(10^12).

The number to be factored is thus 2 * 10^24.

The prime factorization of 2*10^24 is 2^25 * 5^24.

The total number of factors is thus 26*25 = 650.
(Can you see why?)

Just loop over all combinations of 2^i * 5^j, where
0 <= i <= 25 and 0 <= j <= 24, and discard any that
are larger than 10^12.

Very, very simple.

But the data types have to properly chosen to make
it work.

Silver "Christ Hater" Slimer's allegation is misplaced right from the
start, and not correct second of all. Is Wolffan trying to be just as
much of a deceitful liar as the Silver "Christ Hater" Slimer is already
known as being? What did you expect from the lying imbecile? That Silver
"Christ Hater" Slimer cretin has nothing to waste but time. He has nothing
else. Especially not confidence.

It's a prolonged saga, and Silver "Christ Hater" Slimer is simultaneously
a master at off-the-cuff trolling remarks, while posting with forgeries
of Wolffan. Perhaps you use it erroneously. Do you not realize the use
of VPN?

I often squash a chicken with my thoughts. What Mac looks like matters
little and not worth obsessing over, especially if it's better than the
competition. Already moved on from that. Take it as you want!

That's why you, and that flathead DuFuS, keep on looking
at him, listening to him, and reading him.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Fucking transparent losers.

Actually, this is just the brute force, theoretical outline
of my brilliant and perfect solution.

The total number of multiplications can be reduced considerably
through some clever programming.

But I will leave that to your "cleverness."

Your "trained vocalists" apparently haven't gotten wind of pitch correction
software which can make any roten vocalist sound fabulous.

The whole nature of the commercial recording industry, to which you
have an avowed membership, is entirely based on the creation of such
illusions.
