"'This was a spear phishing attack against an unclassified network,' a
White House official told FoxNews.com. 'These types of attacks are not
infrequent and we have mitigation measures in place.'"

The only way to "mitigate" Windows security is to completely block the
outside Internet.

"By opening the email, which likely contained a link to a malicious site
or some form of attachment, the agency member allowed the Chinese hacker
to access a system, explained Anup Ghosh, founder and CEO of security
company Invincea."

Clicked - then redirected and something was installed on the machine.
YAY Windows!
Only on Windows can one false click infect a computer.
It wouldn't have happened on OSX... or and unix-like OS either.

No wonder Apple is stealing the enterprise market from Apple. What
Apple doesn't grab Linux should easily scavenge.

Meanwhile Windows remains at about 92% of the market space. Apple about
7 and Linux 1.

Windows has much improved from what I read in respectable magazines and
web sites. And I think Linux has missed its chance. Too many distros
fragmenting development effort and too many wobbly windows as opposed to
top quality desktop apps and games.

It suits me fine but I dont play games. And I now have a win 7 partition
only for testing IE browsers and syncing/backing up my iPhone.

If Linux is ever to really gain any traction with users, the open source
ecosystem *must* mature to the point where distros can be made with a good
and unified UI (as the KDE team clearly understands) where the programs for
that UI are excellent.

There is a long way to go to reach that point, though things do keep
improving. I hope the KDE team is someday successful in their endeavors.

Do you mean a windopws network that deserved to be hacked because
it is built on top of swiss cheese?

There are more viri infected computers than all the
engineers that micoshaft and partners have available
to repair.

Should they not be using more secure open source technologies
as the Military does?

Wasn't it Balmer who said that he was going to "fucking kill google"?

Well it looks like google has fucking killed Microshaft!!

Balmer has now got his head handed back handed on a plate.

Goodbye Balmer, your days are numbered.

Proprietary software is a truly a dead business model.

Google, Appil, Android all riding high on open source.

It's an attack that was against the network a phishing attack stupid

Of course you lied again Snit.
Windopws is swiss cheese just like appile because they
are both closed source despite appil and micorshaft
stealing code from open source projects and never
giving anything back except threats to sue their own
developers.

Open source on the other hand is protected by the GPL
and fixed in minutes
of bugs having been reported because everyone
has the source code.

That was a Linux Web server that was compromised at the White House that
caused users visiting the White House site to be redirected to a hacker
site.

I completely disagree about Windows improving. I have not seen any
reduction in various malware/virus infections since Windows 2000.
I do agree with you about Linux. Its too Balkanized.
What works on one distro may not work on another. That is a fundamental
problem that must be solved if Linux will ever make a dent in the
desktop market.
The frustration of Microsoft's consistent lack of improvement,
nonchalant attitude towards security and complete disregard for industry
standards is what made me decide to get the hell out of the IT world.

Let it rest in peace.
There are these new things called consoles that seem to be taking over.

What games are out there that are exclusively PC?

The machine that was infected was Windows. That's what they used as a
beachhead to get further into the network.

It doesn't take a "CompTIA" student to figure that one out.

Vista was released before hardware was ready for it and without drivers for

People actually used Vista? I guess the advantage to Vista that the

It doesn't serve them very well at all - most are just too ignorant to
know any better. They're like battered women who think that getting
beat is normal. Basically Microsoft is the Sandusky of modern
computing. However that is changing, as evidenced by Apple's increased
success in the business and enterprise markets.
Conficker would not have happened if more used OSX or any other unix
like OS.

If Apple is so bad, why did AutoCAD develop a completely new version
native to OSX?

What a silly and unsupportable claim. I know people with experience using
Linux, OS X, and Windows and they *pick* Windows. For you to say you know
better than them - without knowing them or anything about them - is absurd.

And they are representative of millions of people.
