IBM is a services company. They will support anything that allows them
to make money. I think our band of trolls are the only ones that actually
refer to them as a "Linux company".

...that just goes to show how ignorant of the real world these troll are.

Yeah, it's a service company all right. And they are losing revenues.
Linux is the kiss of death to any company... even Google knows that.

It only takes a trip to IBM's site to relieve their ignorance:

"What is Watson?

Cognitive computing systems understand natural language and are not

While M$ plays around with tiles and start menus, and Crapple cranks out

And to think Watson is just a part of what IBM is up to.

Nope. It's the "advocates" who first called IBM a Linux company. Any other
factually wrong claims that you want to make?

Linux company IBM has pulled out a $2bn lead over 4th rate mircorshaft in
just as many days.

IBM Struggles to Turn Watson Computer Into Big Business
Revenue Is Far From Company's Ambitious Targets

Three years after International Business Machines Corp. began trying to
turn its "Jeopardy"-winning computer into a big business, revenue from
Watson is far from the company's ambitious targets.

Watson is having more trouble solving real-life problems than "Jeopardy"
questions, according to a review of internal IBM documents and interviews
with Watson's first customers.

While MS and Apple are making billions of dollars, IBM is laying off

IBM was responsible for creating the computer Hitler used to document
Jews <http://www.ibmandtheholocaust.com>

IBM also released the PCJr which tried to give customers much less than
what they paid for: "IBM PCJr ($669 to $1,269)

A stripped down chip off the old block, 1983’s IBM PCJr (PC Junior)
would have been overpriced at any cost. At $1,269 with the absolutely
necessary floppy drive ($669 without), the PC Jr. was quite a bit
cheaper than full fledged IBM PCs of the time, but about on-par with the
Apple IIe and far more expensive than home-computing competitors like
the $200 Commodore 64 and $150 TI-99/4A.

Unfortunately, with its horribly-stiff chiclet keyboard, slow
performance, and a slew of compatibility issues that kept it from
running popular PC programs, the JR wasn’t worth the premium. That year,
I arrived at computer camp earlier than the other kids, just so I could
grab a seat in front of a real PC rather than this awful offspring."

In an effort to hold onto the proprietary nature of their PC and prevent
clones from being manufactured, IBM also produced the MicroChannel
Architecture. Its success would have allowed IBM to continue selling
ridiculously overpriced machines.

When MCA failed, IBM released the PS/1 which gave customers an obsolete
processor with no real ability to upgrade at the same price as
competitors priced their high-performance, upgradeable machines.

IBM released Deskstar hard drives which were prone to failure within a
ridiculous amount of time. There was a class action lawsuit against them
for it:
<http://www.cnet.com/news/ibm-travelstardeskstar-hard-drive-failure-class-action-suit/#!>

Unable to produce a profit due to their ridiculous incompetence, IBM
routinely lays off its workforce and impoverishes anyone who worked
there for even a short amount of time.
<http://www.bidnessetc.com/33231-international-business-machines-corp-ibm-to-layoff-over-100000-employees/>

To say the least, IBM deserves the pain.

Not programmed? What a pile of BS.

No programming necessary! It's another Linux-based miracle! uh huh...

In pretty much every talk I saw on any show where they discussed what they
missed about the future in Back to the Future II, the biggie was the modern
smart phone, which was largely (though not fully) created by Apple. The
iPhone changed things greatly. It was the future nobody saw coming.

They also, in the movie, point to an old Mac and note it as a vintage 80s
computer. It was seen then as the best there was.

“We are making significant progress in our transformation, continuing to
shift IBM’s business to higher value, and investing and positioning

"In 2014, we repositioned our hardware portfolio for higher value,

Chances are that every component of the PC you're typing your dreck

patents but this also includes hardware patents too. Plus IBM also does

Which hasn't prevented the company from becoming less significant with

You say this despite having knowledge of the PCJr's existence, despite
knowing that IBM did everything in its power to squeeze as much money
out of customers all the while providing obsolete, barely-functional
hardware. I never forgot how much of a rip-off that IBM PS/1 I owned was
and I especially never forgot how little time it took for my IBM Desktop

I've had a slimed down version of Watson on win98 on an IBM PC.
Like I said, nothing awe inspiring about it.

You know we don't call 'nobody' 'no-brains' for nothing. He's gotten
really good at coming up with links to crap that is in the doldrums
trying to pass them off as something that is in active and progressing
developement.

So? You say that as if I'm some sort of blithering fan boy (like you).

I'm the one that said that they are doing their best to be less
significant lately. You're late to the party.

What part of "monopoly" did you not understand exactly?

I didn't say that they were choir boys.

I only said that they actually contributed something positive.

If not for them, and Xerox, and Bell Labs you would have nothing.

Lie. You're free to prove it.

Absolutely none of what IBM contributed was positive. The PC itself was
their contribution but it only ended up being so because third-parties
basically hacked it and provided clones. IBM would have preferred for it
not to be that way. Their MCA architecture was not a contribution as
they kept it to themselves. OS/2? They marketed that thing so well that
even THEY didn't use it on their desktop. So I wonder: what has IBM
_contributed_ that has/had any kind of worth?

One of them complained because I took too long responding. It's not just
that they don't have lives, they get morally offended if anyone else does
have a life. :)
