My fiance started a new class this week - an MIS (Management Information
Systems) class. While we were having dinner tonight she brought up the
fact there are some - lets say - colorful definitions of Linux in her
wonderful "Experiencing MIS" text book.

Under a section titled "What Does a Manager Need to Know About
Software?" there are a number of things presented to the reader as
"facts" that I just have to disagree with. It starts with a nice table
describing that describes typical users for Windows, OSX, Unix and Linux
desktop users. What is the description of a typical Linux user you ask?

"rare - used where budget is very limited"

That is right - the only reason to use Linux on the desktop is when you
are strapped for cash. I guess Google never got that memo. The extra
kick in the pants? Apparently the only commonly used application Linux
has is:

"Open Office (Microsoft Office look-alike)"

Never mind that Open Office contains a sane menu interface instead of
"ribbons".

In case the avid reader is curious about who created Linux - that
information is here as well. Linux is developed by the "open-source
community" which is described as:

"a loosely coupled group of programmers who mostly volunteer their time"

I guess they never got the memo that nearly 75% of kernel work is done
by paid developers.

*This is what is holding Linux back on the desktop folks. Not a lack of
hardware support. Not a lack of user friendliness. Just good old fashion
Linux FUD*. The best thing you can do to fight things like this is to
speak up and let the people spreading the FUD know it is not OK to
spread misinformation. Although I must say it really irks me seeing
information like this appearing in a higher education setting.

What is this wonderful text book you ask? As mentioned above it is
titled "Experiencing MIS", written by a man named "David Kroenke", and
published by none other than Pearson Education.

This is absolutely true. The HUGE % of a linux based OS is provided as
part time efforts by the FOSS community.

Bwahaha! As if it doesn't have *far* more functionality than is

Big deal. There are a million lying Linux morons across the world lying
their dishonest asses off day in and day out for years about Microsoft
and Windows performance, stability and cost. The wackjob Linux
"community" is the very definition of FUD.

And the author should've mentioned how important the command line still
is to using Linux.

Eat shit, hypocrite Linux loons.

Yes, a very limited subset like the ability to load edit and save PDF files.

And the "Blithering idiot" is the founder and maintainer of the Populair
Bodhi Linux distribution.

In contrast to "Hadron" Mr. Hoogland actually contributes to the
community. Also in contrast to "Hadron" Mr. Hoogland is a well mannered,
well educated, intelligent, competent and kind person.

I wonder if "Hadron" is even aware of the fact that Libre Office is
derived from the original *commercial*, yet lower priced StarOffice,
which shipped with many Windows 95 computers in Europe.

"Hadron" never ceases to advocate the Microsoft "solution". It's crystal
clear that he is a M$ shill, stupid, incompetent and a miserable
sneering whiny little bitch.

And in case you missed it, he said just the other day that he hates Win7.

He is sharing his own view... speaking for himself.

And, of note, you offer nothing to counter it... just anger. Then fact is
LibreOffice and OpenOffice are quite limiting if you are used to the package
they are designed to copy.

LibreOffice does this very poorly. Heck, just tried opening and saving a PDF
file... *no* changes. Completely mangled it.

So, yes, it gets to put "PDF Editor" as a check box item, but the actual
usability of this "feature" is about none.

OpenOffice / LibreOffice are used when people cannot afford MS Office, by
and large. There are few intrinsic benefits to the open source packages. If
someone thinks otherwise then by all means list them.

More lashing out from the herd because someone dared to speak poorly about
OpenOffice.

Of course, none of the comments about OpenOffice were refuted in *any*
way... the herd just became angry someone would speak poorly about it. How
absurd.

You however, Creepy, *use* MSO. I dont. But it *is* far superior to OO
as you well know.

I detest Windows 7 btw.

*YOU* use it daily. *I* use it *only* for iPhone integration.

You're a fucking idiot Ahlstrom. But you knew that.

Creepy, you're either simple or a liar. Or both since we know you're a
liar. OO has a subset of MSO and you know it.

I dont use MS SW in general. But if you think OO is a replacement for
MSO you're a bigger idiot than your posts suggest. In fact didnt you
claim to edit your company's docs with OO when your bosses were not
looking? Oh, yes ! You did!

Jeezez. What an amazing, shameless, liar and asshole you are, Larry.

Do you think that you can switch from "very limited subset of the
functionality" to "has a subset", attack the *other guy* as being
unreasonable or dishonest, and no one will notice what a filthy, lying
piece of shit you are?

I'd bet that even you mother secretly hates you, Larry!

I have shown things that are "missing" such as reasonable ways to crop and

I knew that it would eventually happen. Now all we have to do is give
the guy or group that wrote the virus a big well done on blowing away
the linux loons imaginary security myth.

Unfortunately, the Microsoft Natural 4000 ergonomic keyboard has
"malwear" problems... the labelling has worn off some of the keys on the
two MS keyboards I have.

But as I've said, M$ *themselves* don't actually make any hardware ATM.

I have a contractor who is using OO. With a multi-million dollar
contract for but a dozen employees, one would think that they would
spring for at least one $500 license for the secretary to do their
presentations & reports, but the simple fact is that they didn't.

Their reports are utter disasters: data charts' scales changing
between what's on the screen vs. what's on the overhead projector, a
third (and horrific) print format, etc. I'll see if I can adequately
recuse a few pages to provide an example to post.

Their poor performance in their reporting in particular means that
they're not going to get their contract renewed. Congratulations Open
Office!

The converse of this is that there are millions of companies//organizations
that continue to pay for and use MS-Office. Are they all "blithering idiots"
for spending money when supposedly something "just as good" is available for
free? They must clearly see some benefit in continuing to pay for and use
MS-Office because if they didn't get a ROI they would stop paying for it.

The IT managers at large companies are very smart individuals. If they could
save a substantial amount from their IT budget by using something that is
*free* then they would do it. Evidently they understand and know something
that anonymous posters to a obscure usenet advocacy group don't.

Exactly. The herd seems really impressed that a tiny fraction of companies /
governments opt to use a program that costs nothing to acquire as opposed to
one that costs quite a bit. If the no-cost option was even close to being as
capable, though, one would think that a large percentage would - perhaps 50%
or more. And if they were both comparable options, other than price, then
surely the majority would use the no cost option, with some exceptions for
groups with uncommon needs served by the for-cost option or a few people who
just did not know better.

The very evidence the herd tries to use to show how lovely OO.o /
LibreOffice are really shows how they are failing to gain much traction even
though they can be had for *no cost*. It is not a good sign for the no cost
options.

Exactly. And do not think the no cost options are not tested and examined in
many places.

It utterly proves the case for as far as I'm concerned. I've been
relatively indifferent in regards to the Office-vs-OO question until I
saw the nightmare that I'm having to deal with from this vendor.

And having two PhD's hasn't helped them.

Which OO app are they using for reports?

I built dozens and dozens of sophisticated, attractive reports in MS
Access thru the years, but as of right now the OpenOffice Base website
says: "At the moment OpenOffice.org Base supports only very limited
report functionality."

Guess what? It said the same thing 4 years ago.

http://dba.openoffice.org/specifications/ReportDesigner.odt

I haven't checked recently, but for years the Base component didn't
support crosstab queries. huh?

By comparison to MS Office, Open/LibreOffice fails in data handling,
reporting, querying, programming difficulty, object model, speed,
interoperability with components, templates, wizards, charting/graphing,
etc.

MS Office is doomed by Open/LibreOffice hobbyware.

by "editing company documents when the bosses are not looking" and also
claim OO can replase MSO. In most business cases OO simply can not

No idea, as I haven't tried to look. It only became evident when I
noticed on their main project presentation that the scales on the
chart were off ... showing NEGATIVE gain on an amplifier was the
obvious clue.

Aborted the presentation and that's where I noticed that it wasn't an M
$ product ... they pulled up the spreadsheet and we confirmed that the
data had actually been correctly entered; created a new graph of the
data and found that the error was repeatable.

Perhaps the reason why they're overdue with getting the corrections
done is because they're continuing to bang their head against the wall
to try to make OO work, instead of just simply buying a damn copy of
MS-Office. Hell, it is a tax-deductible business expense too.

Now that you actually pointed to the problem... it is a common problem
for a lot of vendors to try and cut corners. Sometimes you just can't
do that.

Apple invented cutting corners.
