Good-bye Windows XP, Hello Open Source?

| If I’ve said this once, I’ve said it a thousand times: When will Microsoft
| scrap Windows all together build a new version from scratch? Apple has done
| it several times; Mac OS X is just the most recent; Systems 7 and 9 were
| major upgrades that didn’t look back.
|
| Sure, there are a few bumps along the migration path with each successive
| upgrade, but they’re far outweighed by the benefits of the new operating
| system. And Apple always goes out of its way to include backward
| compatibility through stable emulation.
|
| I’m not saying it anymore. Microsoft, you’re on your own. You won’t have
| Eddie Correia to get crash reports from anymore.

If people choose Windows, then why don't MS prove it by releasing XP as Open
Source - for free - now that its life has expired?
Lots of people might prefer it ...
Or would they? Perhaps MS are too scared to find out.

I know... Microsoft could start with an OSS system, like.. oh, I don't
know... maybe one of the BSDs and put a proprietary layer on top. Then
they would have thousands/millions of people helping to write their OS,
and they could concentrate on a much smaller part of the system...
That would be so innovat.... Oh. Hmmm .. .nevermind.

You're too late - Rex "Kingmaker" Ballard already spewed that stupid
speculation:
"Microsoft has hinted that they are doing a major rework of the kernel,
which will probably be based on the BSD kernel, and will probably be
released with Vista."

Why would MS commit corporate ruin? Look at the slopware thousands/millions
of Linux/OSS developers turn out.
Look at the lying POS that is DFS....

That is not nice!

As I've postulated before, there's probably too much in there that
Microsoft does not hold exclusive rights to (Adobe and others), so
they can't just arbitrarily re-license it, even if they wanted to,
which of course they don't.

Hats off to DFS!
I never tire of the "Kingmaker". Brilliant satire!

They could try mimicking what Nokia had done with Symbian, but as many people
argued, that would not save them. Linux is well-engineered because
of /process/ and /licence/ (that attracts/ed developers).
