Also, don't forget that those three newsreaders above run under multiple
operating systems as well. It might be good to break each one down by
OS. For example, some of my posts show that I've used slrn, Mozilla,
and tin under both FreeBSD and Linux. In the case of tin, some show
that "Cygwin ME" is the OS I've used.

Nahh thats too hard, so instead we are just going to ban BSD ;-)

Nahh, you're our senior citizen here Grey, just post as you like, as
your posts will still contain a lot less junk than the Wintrolls :)
> Nahh thats too hard, so instead we are just going to ban BSD ;-)
Ok, we ban all posters posting from NetBSD. :) I hadn't run NetBSD for
a while. I checked on the web site, and it looks like all my laptop's
HW is supported. Of all the free unices out there: FreeBSD, Linux,
NetBSD, and perhaps even Darwin -- it's driving me crazy. I did try
Darwin, and it did look very interesting with it's spiffy Mach kernel.
I was kinda lost, though, in a big way! I couldn't figure out how to
mount floppies under Darwin, and hence, couldn't compile the drivers for
my ethernet card. I may take another stab at Darwin, although I'd have
to put everything on one big massive partition. Darwin's concept of
partitions and slices could use a little refinement.
The first thing that struck me about Darwin is that when I booted the
install CD, the text covered the entire 1024x768 area of my laptop's LCD
screen, instead of the usual 640x480 little rectangle. :) Linux takes
it one step further with its kernel framebuffer, so I can get 800x600 on
my laptop. But Darwin indeed reigns supreme, using up every bit of
screen real-estate in textmode. Too bad Vesa 2.0 mode is so
excruciatingly slow for pure text...

I object to be listed as "WT" as it is an implied insult (aka Wintroll). If
you want to label me as WT please label all Linux advocates as LN (aka
LinoNut).
Or simply ignore me. Whatever.

Nothing *implied* about it.
I'm not sure what the point is of "(aka Wintroll)"? That's like saying
U.S. (AKA United States). There's a difference between an alias (Also
Known As) and an abbreviation.
(Note: There *is* and *implied* insult in the second paragraph.)

But you *are* a wintroll. This is no insult, it is just a fact.
If you feel insulted by this, so be it. And the linux posters need no
special designation, it is their group (ever wondered what COLA means,
Pete?)

Your offer of working with me to solve the problems I'm seeing - is that
the one?
I can't speak for anyone else, but it would probably amuse me if you were
so childish as to call me a "Shithead."
But you're still missing the point. Calling you a WinTroll is *not* a
description of your character or person but of your behavior in, and only
in, this group.
It's like you went to a alt.cooking.joys.of and just because *you* couldn't
cook and because you tried it a few times and stunk, buring everything, and
so you decided that *no* *one* should cook and went there whining about it
trying to tell people how horrible cooking was and that they shouldn't do
it.
Or, even if you went there to "keep cooks honest" and make them stop acting
like cooking is easy and fun when you don't think it is. Still, it's
trolling. It's not personal; it's just what you *do* here.

About the level of response I'd expect from you.
It was a question, dimwit. Nonetheless, your reaction was expected.
A dumbass like you who can't get the easiest scripts running and so instead
butchers a perfectly healthy linux system to death would not see the
difference between a question and actually calling you so. So you are

You do troll, and if it pisses you off to be called so, just the better.
You are not here by your own admission to get any help at all, until now you
have only (if this even is true) butchered perfectly good linux systems and
then replaced them by a pile of junk called Windows ME.
And then you come here and post how good this works compared to linux.
This is naturally a blatant lie, as have been all your "experiences" with
linux. So, in short, you get what you deserve, moron

Some people just can't be helped.
You just demonstrated your ineptness so profoundly that very few people
would welcome you upon themselves.
Ever tried to teach someone how to use a computer, and spent 15 minutes
trying to explain the purpose of the power button? Sometimes it's best
to just give up before you even get started. It's not worth the stress
it will cause both parties to try to teach them something new. They're
just not ready, willing or able to learn it.
Or in other words: some people just can't be helped.

Exactly. Either this person is deliberately being difficult in order to
be able to cliam that I was not sincere in my offer, in which case he
was/is not at all interested in assistance as many have stated, but merely
wishes to continue talking down about Linux and OSS and supporters of
it....OR...
He really is that obtuse, in which case, as you have stated, any attempts
to assist him would be futile anyway. And would also explain the
so-called "problems" that he has had with Linux and OSS. I've always
stated that anyone who is able to follow simple concise directions would
have no problems with Linux.
What Pete has demonstrated here is that he is incapable (or unwilling) to
follow even the most simple instructions to determine what my email
addresses are, and so therefore of course he is not going to be able to
successfully run Linux.
Linux is not rocket science, but it does often require a certain amount of
functioning grey matter.
I don't believe that the instructions I offered where that difficult, do
you?
My public email address as determined by my sigline, many others were able
to figure it out just fine. My (semi) private email address is this nick
@dfnow.com.
Is that really so hard? I do not want to waste my time attempting to
assist someone who either cannot or will not determine them based on these
instructions. That's pathetic.

Jim, I think that Pete G -- like most people with an IQ higher than 6 --
just can't be arsed dealing with the angry young man of the Linux world.
Koehlmann has proven repeatedly that he's several toys short of a Happy
Meal, and he only EVER posts insults and vitriol. In fact I don't
believe I've ever seen him post a pro-Linux post once -- he just attacks
others.

Wrong, Simone. I am neither angry nor young.

You haven't seen it all. And you do not look into all the linux newsgroups
But this is COLA -- here you can piss off the windroids like flatfish and
Simon Cooke. And guess what -- both of them claim to have killfiled me.
Thats really great, wintrolls killfiling linux users!

Irrelevent to my point, it's not about what Peter K thinks, it's about
what PeteG said. if he doesn't want to be reminded that he has
repeatedly stated that he's not here to get help, then he shouldn't have
said it, or he should repudiate it. He, like many of the wintrolls have
been offered help numerous times, but hasn't taken it.

Wow....someone give that man an advocate card! You make a couple of
semi-positive posts about font rendering under Linux and that somehow
lends you some merit? I don't think so, Simone.
What's the last distro that you've used? SuSE 8.0 you said? No, wait,
you stated you weren't able to sucessfully install that right? So, IIRC,
it was Redhat like 6.0 or something like that, right? Which was some 2
years ago.
So this means you are basing your negative (and positive) experiences of
Linux off of an obsolete release! In all actuality, you are not even
qualified to make any derogatory or otherwise remarks about Linux because
you really have never even used any major modern distro, right?

See, even Simon -- who is rather talented at being obtuse -- managed to
work it out. Yet Pete can't?
Only because Linux doesn't implement all of that DirectX/DirectSound/
etc. stuff. I have an old copy of Unreal (build #225), for example;
under Wine (http://www.winehq.com), it works beautifully.
I wish I could say the same for UnrealEd, but it appears the latter
was cobbled up by someone playing with Visual Basic. :-) So there's
a lot of DDE/ActiveX/whatever involved, and Wine can't quite handle
that yet.
(I'd help, but am not all that knowledgeable in ActiveX myself.)

I think Rapskat just realised that you are terminally stupid and beyond

So either way you have two reasons not to help, is that it? That way you
can honestly thump your chest and claim and you tried to help me, is that
it, but somehow I either turned you down (insincere) or are too stupid to
figure out your EMail and am therefore too stupid to help?

So you can pretend I'm too stupid to help, is that it?
As I said, such arrogance!
Then you should have never come here with your contrieved "2NIC / DHCP"
problem in the first place. Several people tried to help you, naturally to
no avail, because your problem either did never exist (which I suspect) or
that you simply did not want to have it go away.
In either case, you are just slime

Yep, after weeks of posting to and fro, to no avail.
You failed consistently to provide specific error messages, just claiming
that "it still does not work". Anyone got after just a few days the
impression (and rightly so!) that you never wanted help in the first place,
you wanted to troll. Solving your problem was clearly not wanted (by you)

Actually, 2 years ago was Corel:

He wasn't an advocate then either.

There are 3 kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and Microsoft press releases.
Very good point. When I've had problems, in _any_ context, I've tried
to provide enough information to allow those who could help me to get a feel
for my pain.
I do so at work. I'm not too proud to admit that I need the occasional
assist from gurus who know elements of the field in which I toil better
than I do, and try to provide enough information to help _them_ to help me.
This is beneficial to both of us; I get the answers I need, they don't
have to spin their wheels figuring out what I actually asked them for help
with.
When I go to a doctor, I don't expect that the phrase "Hey, it hurts"
will elicit anything other than a barrage of questions to try to narrow
the possible causes of my pain.
Why, in the field of usenet, anyone would expect anything less than requests
for more specific information, is cause for suspicion for their motives.
And being offended by being asked the valid questions that could lead to
a resolution of the problem under question is most _certainly_ a cause
for suspicion.
Especially here, where There Be Trolls a'plenty.
> Jim Richardson <war...@eskimo.com> wrote in
You are correct, there was much arrogance, but it was not on my part.
My offer to assist in any way that I could was indeed sincere. Going
against my better judgement, I extended to you my meager abilities in an
effort to help you out in the true spirit of the Open Source Community.
Just like many others have done for me.
And what do you do? You essentially spat in my face! As someone who has
developed somewhat complex software for both Windows and Linux platforms
and works in the IT industry and makes a living off of being able to
interpret and develop solutions, I am to assume that you are incapable of
discerning two email addresses based on the very clear and simple
instructions that I provided you?
No, I do not think someone of your obvious intelligence (and I am using
that term rather loosely here) would have any problems figuring it out, as
you had clearly demonstrated in a later post.
So, the only conclusion is that you were deliberetly being obtuse in the
interests of forebearing any assistance without seeming to refuse it. If
I had reiterated my instructions to you clearer, you would have found some
other excuse, if I had met that, you would have found another.
The point being, you cannot help someone who does not wish to be helped in
the first place. That is why I pulled my offer. Not out of "arrogance",
but out of unwillingess to play into your puerile games.

When you made your offer of help, did I spit in your face then, as you put
it? No, I did not! Please get your facts straight before you make your
accusations!
You post very _unclear_ instructions about your EMails then called me an
idiot or ignorant for not being able to figure out what you might think is
trivial. Such arrogance!

Nope, now you are making excuses to match your conclusions. Had your EMails
been expressed in a form I understood, I would have contacted you and
perhaps we might have solved certain problems I have. But no, you jump on
me as soon as you perceive I'm stupid and now you're washing your hands of
me.
Such arrogance! It's unbelievable!

I'd say it's pretty damn arrogant of you to decide that I'm not willing to
be helped in _this_ instance (I would have said so otherwise) and state I'm
playing a puerile game. From my perspective, you offer help, I try to take
it, then you back out. That looks pretty damn puerile and arrogant from my
point of view.
If you want proof, go ahead and try me. Tell me how to EMail you, and see
what happens. If I "play puerile games" as you put it, then you'll know, if
I don't, then you'll know I'm sincere, which is what I have been all along.

So, the instructions didn't change. And yet in the space of one post,
you were suddenly able to discern them where before they were "_very_
unclear"?
C'mon Pete, do I really sound that gullible?

Insults?!? Where? If anything, that was an implied compliment. Perhaps you
should look into another brand of Toilet Paper of something.
I will give you some true examples of "veiled insults" later in this post....

You washed you hands of me by playing the fool. I can't be bothered to
attempt to help people that obviously don't want the help to begin with.
And what is so difficult about the instructions I gave to determine my
emails? Obviously they couldn't be too hard as you were able to figure
them out only a couple of posts later!
"this nick @dfnow.com" = The nick that I always post under, my moniker, my
nome de plume if you will, prepended to @dfnow.com, which is my ISP domain in
the commonly accepted email format as defined in RFC 822.
"drop the hot to mail me" = Ever present in my sigline, it gives the
instructions for de-obfuscating my email address in order to determine my
public email. My email address that I post under is indicated as
<rap...@hotmail.com> As per the instructions, if "hot" is dropped from
this address, then what is left is my true public email address.
Not exactly rocket science, Einstein.

I'm sorry, but I can't seem to get my head that far up my ass in order to
see it from "your point of view".

I just did. Hopefully you will get it right this time, considered I all
but tattooed them to your forehead (if you even have one between your
prominent brow ridge and your sloping cranium).

I think you are the only one that did not understand that "this nick
@whatever" did /not/ mean "nick@whatever". I think you are also
the only one who failed to read rapskat's signature to find out if
he had somehow munged his posting address. For future reference,
that's normally the single most common place where people put such
information.
hth.

So it's not the "deliberately being difficult" alternative then, but
rather the other?

Do you /still/ need help figuring out his address(es)?

His instructions were clear enough that noone else seemed to have

Perhaps he overestimated your intelligence?
