HI All,
does anyone know how to run geoworks pro on a newer computer (newer
than a 486) or if there is a patch available to fix the "bad system
handle" error. i really love this software and would love to run it.
please let me know.

thanks in advance
Brad

There are such patches for Geoworks Ensemble (GEOS 2.X) at Två Katter,
but I don't recall if there were ever patches made for Geoworks Pro
(GEOS 1.X). The 2.X patches will not work with 1.X, as the system is
substantially different.

cheers,
gene

Yeah, it is pretty cool still, isn't it?

If you go to www.breadbox.com you will find the latest
version(s) which are a bit more advanced, bug-fixed
and have a few new apps as well.

And they still run really well on 486+ machines.

Cheers,

Tim

I think you need to use SETVER to pass the right DOS version
numbering to GEOS. It's been a long time ago since I used GW Pro
and I don't recall the syntax of SETVER, but you need to configure
SETVER with the kernel file of GW Pro and the last working version
numbering of DOS. I _think_ it should look like this and you write it
at the DOS Prompt, but I might be wrong:

C:\>SETVER KERNEL.EXE 4.00 (press enter)

Where SETVER is the DOS program Setver, Kernel.exe the kernel
file of GW Pro and 4.00 the DOS version number that will work with GW Pro,

And then you should also add setver to your config.sys like this

DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE

This is what I recall, and I might be wrong, please correct me, if wrong?

Hans

There are two other problems:

For systems with more than 32MB RAM you'll need the updated XMS.GEO file
or Ensemble will crash as soon as XMS memory management is initialized
(you CAN disable XMS and just use EMS).
Also, it will crash on the first start because of too-fast processors
(>486/100), so you'll have to set 'continuesetup=false' in GEOS.INI and
install mouse and printer manually instead of letting ht efirst-start
installation procedure handle it.
Also, to use the install program itself, you'll need to have less than
256MB free on disk (fill it up with junk and delete the junk after
installation) or the installer won't believe there is enough free HD
space.

they are not.
