Hi all

I have received Breadbox Ensemble. Wow, it looks cool, but I
can't really enjoy it at the moment, because only 4 out of 6
internet apps works. I have had an email dialog with support at
sun2000, but so far we haven't found a solution. Maybe you guys
can help?

I connect to internet via the ODI driver. The internet settings
is setup correct - they must be, because I can connect using the
FTP program, Mail, Instant Messenger and News just fine.

Only problem is WebMagic and Chat. They both say "check your
internet settings" and refuse to connect.

Also, if I click the Connect button in "Dial-up and Configure"
the status is being reported as disconnected. Even if I click the
button while downloading from FTP it say disconnected.

I have absolutly no idea absolutly what could be wrong. I hope
some of you can help.

Hardware:
IBM Thinkpad 360C (486/25MHz, 36MB RAM)
3COM Etherlink III (3c589D-COMBO)
Cisco 678 ADSL Router (gateway)

Software:
MS-DOS 6.22
QEMM (have also tried without, no change)
3c589.com, lsl.com
BBE 4.01 with patch one (have also tried without, no change)

I have copied a geos.ini file to the end of this message - maybe
some of you can see if anything wrong

Hi Thomas,

We at Breadbox have not tested Ensemble's internet connectivity on anything
other than dial-up connections. And I do know that all the Ensemble 4.01 (patch
1) internet apps do work properly using a dial-up connection.

So I'm guessing that the problem is somewhere in your EtherLink/router setup.
But beyobd that you're way beyond my areas of expertise. Hopefully someone here
has done some experiments with ethernet cards and routers.

John ;-)

Update - I copied WebChat from NDO 3.2A to BBE and tried to start it - it
runs fine. I just don't get it.... What's so special about WebMagic and Chat?

Hi John and all,

I can relate to that... I have noticed some issues with Name resolving
(DNS) too... often I owuld only get a connection after trying twice of
more for the same name till it would resolve the address form the name
successfully... there is always a lenghty wait involved and so I could
imagine there might be an issue in timing that the result maybe comming
much too quick from the DNS for the stack to take advantage of it and
thus waiting till the timeout.

I was quite unhappy about it since I did some development on some
internet apps under geos :-) which cost me nerves and I just left it at
that... (if anyone is interested it's a telnet client and a rsd/rdf/rss
client).

Hope this helps...

Dominique

Interesting:

One year ago, I set up a machine with a 33.6 modem and NDO beta 4.20
which run just fine then.

It was never really used. When I tried it again a couple of moths ago,
it reported "Your connection was interupted while trying to connect."
(or something to this effect). This happens with several different
modems and several ISPs. Only my external 56k modem is working.

I can only guess that this has something to do with the way ISPs are
offering their connection.

Your explanation sounds reasonable. Is there any way the "fast" info
can be cached until the machine is ready?

BTW, yes, I am interested in your Telnet client.

Hi Thomas,

Start WebMagick. Let WebMagick load the error message. When finished loaded, hit the
Reload button. What happens now?

I have no problems whatsoever with Breadbox Ensemble now. Every internet app work as expected with the exception of FTP, which seem to suffer from bugs and the 640 KB barrier.
The only issues that arises is when installing, there is a little bit of hand tweaking needed, but
now I know what to do, so that is usually no problem. I have noticed that it is important when
using a broadband switch like NetGear RP314GE to fill-in all the IP-numbers properly, as the
router both serve as a DNS and IP GW, I have to fill in 192.168.0.1 in both fields. I do 100 megabit on my LAN.

One more upddate - problem is solved! Thanks to Bent Nielsen!!!

Well, when setting up an ODI account you will have to enter a telephone
number and login name also. You can only do that if you, when setting up
the ODI account,

1. temporary switch to "Dial-up ISP",
2. enter the phone number and login name
3. and then switch back to "ODI Network".

Click Connect and you will get a dialogbox saying you'll have to reboot.
After reboot everything works.

The hard way to do the same is to add

phone = 12345678

to geos.ini (login name is only nessesary when using the GUI) That's apparently
the line WebMagic and Chat was looking for and the reason why they wouldn't
connect.

Though glad your problem is solved, I really hope BBX is working on making
GEOS idiot proof if one is not using dial-up, which is quickly becoming
standard.

Hmm... I can't help getting a little afraid of that sentence.
What else haven't you tested? Okay, I understand you only have
limited resources and have to make priorities. But you have made
a fine new dial-up app, and then you only test half of its
functionality? I can't wait to see what surprises you have to me
in next version... :-)

Do you need a proxy? That might explain WebMagick, not sure on chat.

Ignore Dial-up and Configure when using Ethernet.

Try changing this to:
linkDomain = ODI Ethernet

I never figured out what that did, but that's what mine is set to. May or
may not make a difference.

I don't think so. I am pretty shure the problem is the line

phone = 12345678

in geos.ini. Add this line and both programs work, remove it and they fail.
It is not added when you set up an "ODI network" account in Dial-up and Configure
- and why should it? Heck, it's only a minor bug - it should be easy to fix
now it is identified. The other apps works fine, so I'm sure WebMagic and
Chat will do so soon also.

It makes no difference at all. In fact, you can comment out that line (well,
at least I can on my setup in BBE 4.01)

Thanks Hans for the hint but I feel that this is not the issue at my
place :-)

Um, maybe I can mail the current state of affairs :-) pending permision
form Konstantin to include the preliminary version of the tcp/ip
components for NewBasic. I could imagine that both aps work fairly well
over a dial-up line...

Which gives me an idea... I finally have a small phonecentral or PBX or
whatever it is called in english so I could test without phonecosts
arrising :-). Pity my new Job is eating so much of my time :-( though it
is an interesting job :-). The real point might be that working on an
app or a month or two is not soo much fun if you do't use it yourself
and there is maybe one or two in the world who'd use it :-)...

Yep, Breadbox have implemented support for ODI networking in the Dial-up and Configure
app. To get everything working, one needs to set it up as a dail-up connection first, with ALL
the fields filled in, with phone number, username and login (yes, this is vital  to do, even with
ODI network) Then restart BBX Ensemble. Switch from Dial-UP to ODI network radio button
in Dialup and configure. Try to connect now, it should work, if not, restart and try again.
I  have also noted on one occasion that WebMagick shows an error message the first time started
not finding the ISP or something like that. This seems to be a cache problem, and is fixed by
pressing the reload button.
