Cleaning closets I've unearthed a technical manual for the NEC PC-8401A
diskless laptop, which ran Cp/m.

Anyone want it? No charge, I'll mail it. If no takers, it goes in the
trash as the computer was sold years ago.

Suggest a reply by email if you're interested; I don't always have a
chance to follow this newsgroup.

Dave,

Sure, I'll take it as long as it meets one criteria ...
I'm really looking for an EPSON PX-8 Technical Reference Manual but,
along the way, someone said that the NEC 8401 used the same CPU Board as
the PX-8. Do you know if this is true? Are you familiar with the PX-8?

I have a dead PX-8 and have been searching for a TRM to help me repair.

No, the NEC is pretty different, AFAIK. What are the symptoms of your
PX-8? The usual problem is dead batteries, in particular a dead backup
battery (the one you can't easily see). Otherwise, try reseating the
flexible connector to the LCD - under the right-hand hinge cover.

While replacing the main batteries, I plugged in the external AC power
supply with the batteries removed -- and turned on the PX-8 to see if it
would work without batteries. Well, I guess they use the batteries as
part of the voltage regulator circuit 'cause it ain't worked since, even
with the batteries (new & charged) back in. I'm afraid I fried a chip
or two (or three...). I think the LCD is working 'cause I can see it
"flicker" when turning it on but, there's no beep or data written to the
screen. I was hoping the PX-8 Technical Reference Manual would have a
"theory of operations" section describing the power regulation circuit
and/or the power up sequence of events.
