Help... I'm trying to move some files from an Osborne 1 to a DOS
system....
Are there any DOS programs out there that can read Osborne1 CP/M 90K SS
Diskettes????? regards

Yes, I have a DOS program that reads/writes O-1 SS diskettes using a 360K
disk drive on the DOS machine, and I believe that includes the capability
with the 90K version. Do you have access to that kind of disk drive?

You can try 22DISK from www.sydex.com, but most IBM-compatible floppy disk
controllers cannot read single density disks.

Well, some (even newer) PCs can read single density disks.
I have an Asus P55-TP4XE which definitely can handle single
density disks with the on board floppy controller. For 5,25"
single density disks you should install an 40 tracks disk
drive. I suppose an HD floppy drive won't work.

My second PC, an older 486, came with a multi I/O card, which
cannot handle single density. I had to insert a floppy controller
from an even older 386 and now it works.

So a Compaticard isn't necessary in every case. Just try :-)

There is one more hitch to copying OS1 92K disks under DOS. 22DISK is
a fine utility from Sydex that reads many CP/M formats, and will read
them all if you know the parameters for the diskette's you are trying
to read.

The other half of the problem is the diskette drive controller. The
average PC floppy disk controller will not read or write to single
density media. One controller that will do this is MicroSolutions
CompatiCard series, which, alas, is no longer being produced. I had
the good fortune to find a Compaticard IV in a used computer shop and
I currently have it set up in a 386/40. Right now I've got a 5 1/4" x
360K and 3.5" x 1.44 meg floppy drive attached, and have plans to add
an external frive case with 5 1/4" x 1.2 meg and 8" floppy drives.. I
just need to pluck up the courage to make a special cable!
I can offer to copy diskettes for you or anyone needing copies. All I
ask is that folks pay the postage.. I have too many 5 1/4" diskettes
and _need_ to get rid of them, so that part is free :)

More news when I get the 8" floppy working, so I can help folks with
their 8" media.

A question to those in the know: My 386 machine also runs Linux. Is
there a program like 22DISK that runs under linux? I've found one
CP/M emulator for Linux, and I imagine there are others.

Some versions of 22disk came with gory details on hardware
mods to certain disk contollers to enable single
density reading of softsector diskettes. I did the mod
on an old IBMPC controller and it worked. Writing single
density is apparently more of a stretch.

My Asus P55-TP4XE supports read/write/format of single density disks.

why not connect a null-modem from serial port to serial port, and run a
comm program on each end?

Thank you to all...
In this case the 22DISK
did work with my Pentium Pro and I have recovered 82 disks flawlessly.

Once again . . . Thank you all for your assistance.

Because it is slower, less convenient, and many folk do not have a
communication program for their Osborne. Enough reasons?
