....does anyone know if it's possible to set one of these old things up as a
terminal for a unix rig?
I have had one sitting here for a long time and decided it was time to try
and put it into use....anyone remember these things?

Just turn it on. One of the startup options in he main system menu is "T"
for Terminal mode.

The Digital Rainbow has the workings of a VT100 terminal built in, no
software required. If a VT100 will do it for you, plug and play!

Just start her up and select terminal mode. Press Set-Up (F3) to set
up the communications parameters and you're all set. You could always
get some terminal softare for MS-DOS or CP/M if you'd prefer. Lots of
good programs available.

Yep. I've got 4 working myself, still.

Unless You've set the thing to automaticly boot one of the drives, (I
think there was an option for that in the set-up menu), it
should ask for either terminal mode, letter A-D for one of the 4
floppy drives possible, or E-? for the HD partition to boot from.

As for using the machine as a terminal, from within an OS, I HIGHLY
suggest MS-DOS Kermit, which is available from ftp.update.uu.se
/pub/rainbow/msdos/kermit , The CP/M version is a little limited by the
In-CMOS Terminal settings, but works too (same site, instead,
/pub/rainbow/cpm/kermit .) I think one of the MS-DOS Fido comm programs
can do Zmodem (memory failing me), but limited to a maximum 9600 baud.

As for making it a UNIX machine itself, as far as I know, not possible..
Ventur-Com did have plans for a VENIX-86 for the 'Bow, but it never
came to light, though it is an option in the partitioning, of WUTIL 3.2.
Sadly, unless they release the whole workings of the 'Bow, not many of
the other 'NIX' OS's are possible.. (almost wonder why Micro$oft never
ported ZENIX over.. the 'Bow was a pretty good machine in its infancy.)

Hope this points you in the right direction, Cooter!
