I'm looking for a Western Digital MFM controller, part number WD1002-05 or
WD1002-HDO. This is not the ISA version. I believe they may have been used
in the Kaypro 10 at one time.
Thanks for any leads.

I could use one myself, I found a place on the net that had new ones for
sale at $50.00+shipping. I can't remember the web address, it just seemed a
little too steep for me at the time.

Actually the -05 is the hd & floppy version of the -HDO which is the hard
drive only controller. The -05 can replace the -HDO (just don't connect the
floppy drive). If you need data sheets refer to:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~fjkraan/comp/wd1002/
The WD1002-HDO is a hard-disk only variant of the WD1002-05. The -05
includes support for up to four floppies. I've got a couple of 'em, but
they're in a box somewhere. I also have a couple of -HDOs that I've
pulled from Kaypros.

The disk controller he is looking for is not an ISA controller as used in
older IBM PC class ISA machines. He is looking for a controller based on
the same chipset (WD's 1010 & 1015) that is a stand alone card (does not
plug into a card cage). The WD1002-HDO used a 40 pin bus that was commonly
interfaced to many other machines including but not limited to Kaypro's,
Tandy's, Televideos, etc. these machines usually required a bridge card to
connect it.
I believe that Herb Johnson used to advertise them. I don't know if he has
any left or how much he wants for them.
They are very scarce now. People that have them either give them away for
free/dirt cheap or charge an arm and a leg. I have seen them advertised for
several hundred dollars.
Many are used on Z80 machines, often there are IDE controllers that are
hobbyist support available for those with hardware skills. If he is trying
to run on a Z80 with CP/M GIDE may be a good option.

Exactly! I've seen several companies selling them for around $50.00 new old
stock.
I need the type to use with the Tandon 5meg HD. I believe it's the 1001 or
1010 from past posts. I also have an off brand 'Clone Computers' (20 meg I
think) unit. That one has a controller but it's not tandy compatable (I
think). It has a 50 pin style connector that my model 3 cable will fit into,
but since it came with 6 external floppies numbered 1-6 I'm thinking this
set was not used on a tandy (would be 3or4 floppies max). Hence I'm thinking
that it's either SCSI or SASI and I'd need some type of adapter bridge type
thingy to run it on a model 3.I don't have too much time to deal with these
right now, but it's definitely coming soon.
I will probably wind up building one of those MyIDE interfaces I've seen on
the net, I just like the rumble of the old drives. Thanks for the offer
Skipp, I've always wondered if it would be difficult to adapt one of those
ISA cards to an older tandy, guess I'd need an ISA interface right? There's
a project!

If you already have the rest of the hardware (bridge) getting an -HDO is
going to be the fastest and easiest way to go. If all you have are drives
it is just as easy to go IDE. Get a worn out fan and attach it to the drive
to get your sound effects ;->

Thanks for the suggestion, Skipp. I'm trying to set up a hard drive for my
TRS-80 Model I's under DOS and Model 4 under CP/M. I read that hard drives
from Tandy used the WD-1002 after they switched from the old 8x300
controllers. I have one of the older controllers, and want a second to
share among my assorted computers.
I found data sheets on the WD-1002-05, and understand that the -HDO version
is the same except for the lack of floppy support (which I don't need). By
comparing the two controllers, I should be able to get the WD-1002 working
for my systems.
I'll take a look at the pin configuration for the 8-bit ISA bus and see how
messy it could get. The signals should all be on the card edge, though in
different locations. Plus I'll have to deal with the power issue...

Those of us who want to emulate one of the 8.4Mb Shugart boxes that RS
first sold for the Mod 2 and 16 have more work to do. A bigger fan,
plus a parakeet.

Thanks for the reference. I've contacted Mr. Fosdick and offered him the one
card I have left in stock. I believe the ones I had came from Kaypro's.

Ha!
Back when they had them, this would have been felony burglary! ;-)

Jeez, I wish I had a Kaypro 10. Got a 16, just as ugly, but it's a
damned PC. If I wanted a luggable PC, there are several much nicer
ones. But the thing was sitting on the curb (next to a Mod 2 with a
2-drive expansion bay and an LP-VI).
Anybody got a source or fabrication instructions for the head load pads
used in Radio Shack's CDC and Tandon 8"SSDD drives?

Find some thick un-dyed felt and use a hole punch, use contact cement. Make
sure you clean the head after (just incase you got something on it).
I have dealt with a large number of different disk controllers, the only
WD1002-05 I have ever worked with is:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~fjkraan/comp/wd1002/
The Hard Disk Only version WD1002-HDO is the more common version. The -05
often was used without plugging in the disk cable, just using it as a -HDO.
Below is a link to a list of WDC's legacy ISA cards (which does not include
WD1002-05):
http://www.wdc.com/en/library/legacy/controllerboards/index.asp
WDC does not mention either the WD1002-HDO or the WD1002-05, they are
obviously too old to be listed.
A search of the internet for "WD1002-05" only comes up with the host bus
model.
If you have a 16 bit ISA WD1002-05 card I assume that it is not a Western
Digital Corp controller and could be one of the thousands of cheap clones
manufactured.
I do appreciate the tip. Mr. Johnson has been most helpful.
